MEMS Carbon Monoxide CO sensors

MEMS Carbon Monoxide CO sensors

Rainbow's MEMS CO sensor is a type of gas sensor that detects carbon monoxide (CO) using Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology. MEMS sensors are miniaturized devices that combine mechanical and electrical components on a single chip. These sensors are widely used in various applications due to their small size, low power consumption, and high sensitivity.

How MEMS CO Sensors Work

Sensing Layer:

The core of the MEMS CO sensor is the sensing layer, typically made of metal oxides like tin dioxide (SnO?). This layer undergoes a chemical reaction when exposed to CO gas.

In the presence of CO, the metal oxide reacts with the gas, leading to a change in its electrical resistance.

Micro-heater:

To enhance the sensitivity and response of the sensor, a micro-heater is often integrated into the MEMS structure. The heater maintains a specific temperature, which is optimal for the reaction between CO and the sensing layer.

Electrical Measurement:

The change in electrical resistance of the sensing layer is measured by the sensor's electronic circuitry. This change is proportional to the concentration of CO in the surrounding air.

The sensor's output is then processed and converted into a readable signal, typically in parts per million (ppm) of CO.

Signal Processing:

The sensor's output signal is often processed using algorithms to compensate for environmental factors like temperature and humidity, ensuring accurate readings.

Applications:

Indoor air quality monitoring.

Industrial safety.

Home Carbon Monoxide Alarm.

Portable CO detectors.

These sensors are valued for their small size, low power requirements, and ability to provide real-time monitoring in various environments.
