Memory: some very preliminary but exciting news from Northwestern University Medical School

I want to draw your attention to the following article from Northwestern and also a peer-reviewed journal abstract from The American Academy of Neurology, both from Q2 of this year:
Journal abstract: https://n.neurology.org/content/92/20/e2349
Article from NW: https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2019/04/brain-stimulation-reverses-age-related-memory-loss/
Quote from the article:
“Stimulating a precise location of the brain’s memory center with electromagnetic pulses improves the memory of older adults with age-related memory loss to the level of young adults, reports a new Northwestern Medicine study.
“Older people’s memory got better up to the level that we could no longer tell them apart from younger people,” said lead investigator Joel Voss, associate professor at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “They got substantially better.”
The study used Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to target the hippocampus – the brain region that atrophies as people grow older, which is responsible for memory decline.”
I don’t think I need to tell any of you why this is so potentially exciting.
In addition, the protocol is:
-- Short
-- Non-invasive
-- May also significantly improve mood
-- Was tested on humans, not animals
We must always remember these early tests often do not play out over time… but sometimes they do.
These are exactly the kind of remarkable emerging technologies not available to the general public that daVinci50 will endeavor to validate so Members can take action.
Please remember two of our founding principles:
-- If the risk is low and the benefit is potentially high, lean toward action. Time is our enemy.
-- Our Members must always be able to “skip the line” and have first access.
We will be watching this test closely and have Professor Voss come to our meeting, if appropriate, so we can form a personal relationship with him and get an up to the second briefing.
Exciting!

5 年transcranial magnetic stimulation has some risks including meaningful effects on mood, seizures and tinnitus, negative cognitive effects and other theoretical side effects. nevertheless, an exceptionally interesting study, thx for calling it out for attention. TMS therapeutic effects for other uses seem relatively durable. my guess is that presently unknown or unusual therapies (such as valproate, s-adenosylmethionine, blocking astrocyte TGF-β receptors, other psychologically active medicinal adjuvant substances) will be of use. one thing is certain, this subject matter is important to all of us.
