In memory of Professor James (Jerry) Spivey
A friend of many of us, an inspirational figure of the heterogeneous catalysis field, Professor James (Jerry) Spivey passed away on July 14, 2024.
You may know Jerry as the past editor-in-chief of Catalysis Today, or a renowned scientist who devoted his 40+ year long career on C1 catalysis, or a true gentleman who always wore a purple tie in many conferences all over the world, or a big LSU Tigers football fan who always greeted you with “Geaux Tigers” on a gameday. One thing that I will always remember, maybe many of you as well, is the kindness Jerry treated everyone with. No matter if you were his close friend, or a random student who just wanted to shake hands with him in a conference, he was always with a big smile whenever you saw him.
I was very lucky to collaborate with Jerry on several research projects since I joined LSU as an assistant professor in 2016. Jerry had been my faculty mentor since then. He shared with me not only his wisdom on research, teaching, mentoring, collaboration, but also his research equipment such as infrared spectrometer, which is a crucial component for almost all my research projects. These invaluable help meant a lot to me. It is extremely difficult to express my feelings at this moment when I just realized that he was no longer with us.
May Jerry rest in peace!
Finally, I’d like to mention that we will have a CATL symposium in honor (memory) of Prof. Spivey’s career on C1 catalysis at the coming ACS fall national meeting in Denver. Please join us at the symposium if you have a chance.
Associate Professor at Louisiana State University
6 个月Jerry was one of the most kind and generous persons I’ve ever met. His passion for research and service influenced the careers of many young people, myself included. The EFRC he led in 2009-2014 put catalysis research at LSU on the map like nothing else. He will always be missed and remembered.
Principal Engineer at KeyLogic Systems
6 个月I had the privilege to work for and with Dr. Spivey at RTI in the late 80's. He was a true professional and gentleman. He will be missed.
Research Scientist; Catalysis - Retired
7 个月Jerry was a true scientist and person. His insight into catalysis will be missed.
Co-Founder of Susteon and Sustaera
7 个月Jerry Spivey hired me at RTI in 1990 and we worked together until 1999 when he left RTI to become a faculty at LSU. He was a great colleague and pioneer in the field of catalysis.
Chemical Engineering Ph.D. Candidate|Computational Electrocatalysis| Computational Chemistry| Graduate Certificate in Materials Science and Engineering
7 个月May his soul rest in peace and may God comfort his family, amen.
