Memory for ChatGPT
ChatGPT Gains Memory and New Controls...
Yesterday OpenAI announced that this week it would be rolling out "memory and new controls for ChatGPT" to a small portion of ChatGPT free and Plus users to learn how useful it is. They went on to say that they would soon share plans for a broader roll out.
This feature will allow ChatGPT to remember information from past conversations, improving the quality and relevance of future interactions.
Aside from the obvious privacy concerns, the feature itself, would really add an entirely new dimension to ChatGPT's usefulness.
What is ChatGPT's Memory?
ChatGPT's memory will be a secure (encrypted) storage system that retains information gleaned from past conversations. This could include details like specific topics discussed, user preferences, and even past decisions made within the chat. According to OpenAI, by remembering this context, ChatGPT could:
User Controls and Safety:
Of course, with any powerful tool, user control and safety are paramount. ChatGPT's memory comes equipped with several features that empower the user to manage their data and privacy:
The Future of ChatGPT with Memory
The addition of memory marks a significant step forward in the evolution of ChatGPT and LLMs more broadly. This powerful feature has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with language models, making them more helpful, efficient, and personalized than ever before. As ChatGPT continues to learn and grow, I'm excited to see the innovative ways in which its memory will be used to enhance communication, creativity, and productivity. It certainly is a logical next step and one that I have anticipated and welcome, though cloud based individual user-associated-memory also brings with it, privacy concerns, which should not be overlooked or dismissed.

Privacy
It is welcomed that users will have complete control over what memories are stored, as mentioned earlier:
Final Thoughts...
We humans are messy. Look at your computer's folder and file system... or your browser's bookmarks. When was the last time you organized either? I venture to guess; they are a bit of a mess and haven't been reviewed or organized in... well... ever? Although ChatGPT's memory function will certainly not remember everything (an algorithm will determine what is worth remembering and what is not), if you decide to use the feature, it is worth considering a disciplined and regular review of what has been saved and purge, as appropriate.
OpenAI will also use content that you provide to ChatGPT, including memories, for the purpose of improving their models. You can turn this off in Data Controls and I highly recommend that you do. It is one thing to have OpenAI review your query about ancient Greek gods and another thing entirely for them to see that your Uncle George's birthday was April 12th.
