Memory for ChatGPT

ChatGPT Gains Memory and New Controls...

Yesterday OpenAI announced that this week it would be rolling out "memory and new controls for ChatGPT" to a small portion of ChatGPT free and Plus users to learn how useful it is. They went on to say that they would soon share plans for a broader roll out.

This feature will allow ChatGPT to remember information from past conversations, improving the quality and relevance of future interactions.

Aside from the obvious privacy concerns, the feature itself, would really add an entirely new dimension to ChatGPT's usefulness.

What is ChatGPT's Memory?

ChatGPT's memory will be a secure (encrypted) storage system that retains information gleaned from past conversations. This could include details like specific topics discussed, user preferences, and even past decisions made within the chat. According to OpenAI, by remembering this context, ChatGPT could:

  • Deliver more personalized responses:?It would allow a conversation that picks up right where you left off,?without needing to rehash old ground.?It would allow for a more natural and engaging dialogue that adapts to your specific needs and interests beyond single session context (At present, ChatGPT can only provide in-session memory/context.).
  • Complete tasks more efficiently:?If you've instructed ChatGPT to perform a certain task in the past,?it could now leverage its memory to complete similar tasks more efficiently in the future.?This would save time and effort,?making ChatGPT a more valuable tool for workflows.
  • Remember preferences:?Preferred writing styles or go-to sources for information,?ChatGPT could remember these preferences and tailor its responses accordingly.?This personalization would ensure that users get the most out of their interactions with ChatGPT.
  • Custom GPTs: Custom GPTs will have their own memories, separate from other custom GPTs and the main ChatGPT. This could prove helpful if you want to segment "memories" to only a single GPT or specific memories to specific GPTs.

User Controls and Safety:

Of course, with any powerful tool, user control and safety are paramount. ChatGPT's memory comes equipped with several features that empower the user to manage their data and privacy:

  • Granular control:?Users will be able to instruct ChatGPT to remember specific things,?forget others,?or even clear its memory entirely.?This level of control should help users to have complete autonomy over the information ChatGPT retains.
  • Transparency:?Users will be able to access and review the information stored in ChatGPT's memory at any time.?This transparency should help to foster trust and understanding,?allowing the user to make informed decisions about how their data is used.
  • Privacy safeguards:?OpenAI states that ChatGPT's memory is built with robust security measures in place to protect users' privacy.?Data is encrypted and only accessible to the user and authorized personnel.

The Future of ChatGPT with Memory

The addition of memory marks a significant step forward in the evolution of ChatGPT and LLMs more broadly. This powerful feature has the potential to revolutionize the way we interact with language models, making them more helpful, efficient, and personalized than ever before. As ChatGPT continues to learn and grow, I'm excited to see the innovative ways in which its memory will be used to enhance communication, creativity, and productivity. It certainly is a logical next step and one that I have anticipated and welcome, though cloud based individual user-associated-memory also brings with it, privacy concerns, which should not be overlooked or dismissed.

Privacy

It is welcomed that users will have complete control over what memories are stored, as mentioned earlier:

  • Turning the memory feature off: Users can completely turn this feature off to "opt out" as it were.
  • Temporary chat without memory: Even if users have elected to turn the memory feature on, they will still be able to elect to have chats which do not include the retention of memory/information.
  • Granular control: Users will be able to review what information ChatGPT has retained in its memory and manually add or delete any information as they see fit. This includes a complete and total clearing of all memories.

Final Thoughts...

We humans are messy. Look at your computer's folder and file system... or your browser's bookmarks. When was the last time you organized either? I venture to guess; they are a bit of a mess and haven't been reviewed or organized in... well... ever? Although ChatGPT's memory function will certainly not remember everything (an algorithm will determine what is worth remembering and what is not), if you decide to use the feature, it is worth considering a disciplined and regular review of what has been saved and purge, as appropriate.

OpenAI will also use content that you provide to ChatGPT, including memories, for the purpose of improving their models. You can turn this off in Data Controls and I highly recommend that you do. It is one thing to have OpenAI review your query about ancient Greek gods and another thing entirely for them to see that your Uncle George's birthday was April 12th.

Interesting...I can see how it can be useful - to not have to repeat the prompt on every session
