Memories of Russian student life -Late Kumar Jayasinghe

There were certain less known unwritten, unpublished things about life in Communist Russia during our stay there. Things have changed a lot now

1 Russians were keen that foreign students who studied there to go back serve their countries after they completed their studies

2 Russians did not encourage Russian women leaving Russia with foreigners due to certain unfortunate things that happened in the past which had received bad publicity; this in turn led to discouraging marriages to Russian partners

However there were exceptions .Those, I believe had to go through a rigorous process

I am writing about one other student who was in our batch celebrating 5oth anniversary

Late Kumar Jayasinghe graduated from the engineering faculty .He was an old boy of Royal College who had some interest in music and dancing

In our university there was a place for us to learn music and dancing if wished, all that was free of charge. Our Kumar went to this place and he like the Russian music and dancing .He also liked the young music teacher, had an affair with her which led to marriage. Kumar wouldn’t want to come back to SriLanka, so he found employment as an interpreter in SriLankan embassy in Moscow and worked there till he died prematurely of a brain tumour

Before his death I had the opportunity to visit his home in Moscow during one of my visits to Russia. I saw the house of full of pumpkins. Muscovites who live in a flats are given land in Moscow suburbs to build a summer house (Dacha) and cultivate. That explains the load of pumpkins in his Moscow house. I have not visited this Music and dancing except once.I went there because they wanted me to compeer a big concert where students of many countries performed and held in a very big hall

When I visited Kumar ,he was somewhat worried and distressed. In Russia there was a rule that all young people who do not enter the university to serve the Army for 3 years. Those who graduate would serve for one year. Kumar was actually worried about his only son who was about to be enlisted

I had very little time left .I wish them well and left

Few years later I got the sad news about his demise. He is the first in our batch to leave us forever. May he attain Nibbana,
