Memories of My Father, he was more than just an award winning teacher and author, but the best Daddy ever! Dr. Stephen L.Berman Ph.D.

I was sick a lot even in my 20's & early 30's! My Daddy always took me very seriously, my Mom said I just need to relax! When your hearts fast & you have trouble breathing that is no time 2 relax! Once I was home alone sick w/a fever, sweating & shaking 2 sick to wake up much & take my temperature which I was 2 afraid 2 take I know it would say 105.6 I felt that terrible, I was on something Tempra, Pedia-Care or Children's Tylenol, but I was due 4 another dose, it knocked me out, a child's dose! My Daddy was at school teaching, my Mom & brother probably out shopping or getting dinner! I wasn't even near a phone, I was in my room asleep on my bed! Another time I has 102.5 fever Daddy wanted me to go to the E.R., I was 2 sick 2 move or get out of bed, I slept that one off! Another time I had trouble breathing, Daddy made me come down stairs 2 the kitchen 2 use the vaporizer 2 help open up my breathing passages, it worked, boy was he smart! Then a few years ago I had terrible broncitious I saw my Dr that day Dr. Martin Biers he asked Daddy if he heard me cough, 2 make sure, he told me 2 hold still & stop wiggling, he was in his late 80's & my grandparents Dr, he was super kind like a great Uncle, he use 2 threaten 2 send me back 2 my pediatricians office, lol! He took x-rays, I had 102 fever & only had green diet jello that morning, it made it hard 2 breath, I was hot, cold, tired & just feeling yucky! I got worse that night, I woke up & was hungry & thirsty & had egg nog ice cream this was be4 thanksgiving November 19th, 2010 it made my congestion & breathing worse, it was 3 am & I was in my Dad's arms having trouble breathing, he told Larry 2 take me right down 2 the E.R., they gave me a strep throat test & took my temp which was normal then around 100! They sent me home an hour later, we went 2 CVS to get popsicles & drinks, I could barely talk or swallow, my throat was terrible! It was fun looking around there at 4 am! I got home & had another asthma attack so Daddy sent Larry back to CVS 4 Robitussim DM! It helped 4 a while, but if you can't breath & lie down U can't sleep! I watched All in the Family the 1s w/Stephie! It was a very hard night, Daddy was O.Ding me on Robatussian so I could breath 4 a while, then early he made an appointment w/my polmonoligist & I had been there in the past & not did so well on the breathing tests & the bike riding test, but I had another attack there & the male nurse called Dr. Lerhman & said U better come fast, she's really short of breath, he came quick, took my 02, it was 91% out of 100%, thats terrible anything under 95% is bad! He gave me a breathing treatment, where U breath in steam & medicine to open up your lungs, I had more rubitussian it was keeping me awake 2 breath! I had lots of gross light green thick spit, yellow & clear spit! He gave me steroids, Cleoson & an inhaler & said lots of steam, he didn't think I'd like being away 4m my family in Westchester Medical Center Hospital, I came close to getting admitted 4 bronctious! Then we had to go 2 Mamaroneck CVS 2 pick up all my prescriptions, it was a fun day 3 Drs, no sleep! Then they wanted to stop 4 chinese on the way home! Long day, I got home watched more All in the Family & went 2 sleep! The next day I still had lots of spit & could barely talk, very raspy, sore voice, the E.R, called 2 check on me & said I sounded terrible, now they care & believe me, they did nothing! I was living on green apple flavored Cleosen & Rubituasin & cherry, orange & grape ice pops! Thats all I could eat 4/ 4 days, I almost died, I was never that sick! I watched Room For One More on T.C.M. it's an old movie about orphans getting adopted, being accepted 4 their own self, even though they had emotional & psychical problems, being loved & wanted! Daddy made me better by forcing me 2 take all my meds! He gave them 2 me! I was like 109 lbs when I 1st got sick, I went 2/104 lbs in 4 days! I couldn't be left home alone because I had asthma attacks 4m bronctious, I had hyperactive reactive airway disease! I didn't want 2 use the inhaler & become dependent on 1! My first real meal was mac & cheese & maui onion potato chips, 4 dinner chicken & pignuts & baked beans, sticky toffee ice cream 4 dessert! I was better now! My family loved me & got me all better!
