Memories and Learnings from IBM, and an Exciting New Chapter at HCLTech

After more than five years at IBM, where I started as a graduate, it’s with mixed emotions that I’ve decided to embark on a new journey. My time at “Big Blue” has been transformative, filled with incredible experiences, professional growth, and cherished relationships.

During my tenure, I had the privilege of working across various industries—banking, telecommunications, insurance, utilities, and government. I collaborated on large-scale projects with teams of 100+ developers and engineers, spread across different countries. Some of these projects were so groundbreaking, that I was bound by NDAs, keeping their tasty secrets under wraps!

The mentorship and friendships I’ve built along the way have shaped my personal and professional growth. One of my proudest moments was being featured on IBM’s Talent With a Purpose podcast, a testament to the incredible support I’ve received from colleagues and mentors alike.

IBM Consulting NZ provided the perfect balance—the vast power, resources and drive behind you from being in a global company and having the small agile teams with close personal relationships with clients that come with being in a small country like Aotearoa.

Key Learnings:

IBM has taught me countless lessons, but some stand out as pillars of my consulting approach:

  • Empathy is Key: Understanding people’s perspectives—their challenges, needs, and concerns—is vital. It’s not just about solving a problem; it’s about creating solutions that truly resonate.
  • Ask Questions, Even the Simple Ones: As consultants, we need to deeply understand the client’s world, asking the “dumb” questions is not only essential but often leads to breakthroughs in thinking and problem-solving.
  • Speak Up and Collaborate: Don’t hesitate to voice your concerns or seek help. I’ve learned that many challenges are solved when we open up, and I’m thankful for the countless times a casual conversation led to critical advice or support from colleagues.

Impactful Memories:

My time at IBM was defined by experiences that made a positive impact on IBM and the community

  • Community and Volunteer Work: IBM’s Blue Day Out allowed me to contribute to the Motuihe Island restoration project. Volunteering alongside fellow IBMers to protect the environment was incredibly rewarding.
  • P-Tech Initiative: I was heavily involved in IBM’s global P-Tech program, mentoring underrepresented students and helping them pave their way into technology careers. Over the years, I spoke at various events, participated in field trips, career expos, and had the honour of managing a cohort of P-Tech interns.
  • Diversity & Inclusion: I helped organise the powhiri for Shannon Harris, IBM’s new country leader, as well as the opening of our new office, blessed by Ngāti Whātua ōrākei. I co-led a cohort through the Education Perfect: Te Ao Māori for Professionals course and led celebrations for Matariki and Te Wiki o te Reo Māori to connect myself and IBM closer to Aotearoa’s rich cultural heritage.

As I move on to my next adventure at HCLTech, I’ll proudly wear the “ex-IBMer” badge. The friendships and experiences I’ve made here will stay with me as I step into this new role, and I’m excited to continue working with my IBM Consulting NZ buddies on this new journey.
