Memories in Bottles
I bottle my memories. Literally. I like to keep them intact. You can see them but you cannot touch them. They are safe in their bottles and I can pick just one of them, and spend some time with it.
Some of them are a bit faded; other - vivid and sharp as they just happened. Some make me smile; some make me sad. But I love all of them - they are such a great part of me, they make me who I am today.
It is fascinating what can take us back to the past in a millisecond - a smell from our childhood, a word, a place, a photograph...
Memories in Bottles was part of my solo exhibition in 2016 SAUDADE at the Cambridge School of Art. Hanging in bunches on fishing lines, the bottles gave a faint cling every time someone interacted with them.
"Saudade" is a Portuguese word that in English is best translated as "a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past" (Oxford Dictionary). Similar terms exist in other languages - Arabic - ??? (wajd); French - regret; Spanish a?orar.

3 年What a lovely idea - and we really need a word for Saudade in English, too. I don't think nostalgia is quite the same?

3 年Regina Ray what a great idea. In today’s world of everything being digital- and past boxes and boxes of pictures- it’s a unique way to bring to life these great pictures and all the memories they bring. ??
