In Memoriam: Pierre Cazes (Honorary Member of the SFdS)

Please, allow me to share with you the sad news announced by Christophe Biernacki, current President of the French Statistical Society (SFdS):

"[SFdS] Death of Pierre Cazes

Dear all,

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Pierre Cazes, honorary member of the SFdS, on Tuesday 12 November in Paris. Born on 1 December 1940, he would have been 84 in a few days' time.

Pierre Cazes was a pillar of our community, of the ASU and then of the SFdS, committed to promoting statistics in its various forms. He was an outstanding editor of the Revue de Statistique Appliquée from 1979 to 2006, until its merger with the Journal de la SFdS, which succeeded the Journal de la Société de Statistique de Paris. He worked alongside Henri Caussinus as editor of this new journal for a further two years. Elected a member of ISI in 1985, he was also president of the Société Francophone de Classification.

Known for his work in data analysis with Jean-Paul Benzécri, he had an exceptional statistical culture that went far beyond that. As a professor at Paris-Dauphine University and a member of CEREMADE, he trained hundreds of students there and at ISUP, and supervised many theses. As a reader, proof-reader or rapporteur, his meticulousness was legendary, but it was always exercised in a benevolent spirit that helped the author to progress.

His availability, gentleness and kindness were immense. He had the modesty and simplicity of the greatest.

Many of us and his family will miss him. He leaves behind a wife and many children and grandchildren to whom he devoted a great deal of time. Our thoughts are with them; the SFdS joins them in their grief.
