In Memoriam : The life and legacy of my mentor Dr M S Swaminathan

In the intricate tapestry of my life, there exists a singular thread, a luminous figure who not only profoundly impacted my life but also illuminated the path for countless others. Dr M S Swaminathan, affectionately known as Professor, left an indelible mark on my life's journey. As we bid farewell to this towering figure of wisdom and compassion, I reflect upon the profound influence he had on my life.

From a young age, I was drawn towards Science and Technology. However, as I started winning some competitions, my inquisitiveness transformed into an insatiable thirst for fame and acclaim. Unintentionally, I embarked on a path that led me into a complex maze of self-promotion, where the true essence of my passions became obscured.

Post my graduation, the serendipitous course of life guided me to TCS Ignite in Chennai. During my Ignite days, fate led me to cross paths with Swaminathan sir. While working on a drone project, I seized the opportunity to approach him with my concept of using drones for agricultural purposes. Meeting him in person was an experience beyond words, a man whose list of accomplishments could fill volumes, yet a soul profoundly humble and ceaselessly uplifting others.

One of my first meetings with Swaminathan sir

As I spent some weekends in his genial company, I discovered not only technical knowledge but also invaluable life lessons. His mentorship had a transformative effect gradually peeling away the layers of conceit, ego, and the relentless pursuit of recognition. Though, like many, I harbored aspirations of venturing abroad for financial gain, it was Professor who unveiled the significance of purpose-driven passion and the imperative for the youth to channel their talents into addressing the pressing challenges faced by developing countries.

I relish a wonderful incident that vividly illustrates his wisdom and the profound shift in my perspective that he initiated. Once Professor presented a seemingly straightforward question: "Do you love your country?" Without hesitation, I replied, "Yes." However he delved deeper with the query, "Why?" My response remained instinctual, "Because I was born here."

In a masterful stroke of analogy, he then posed another question, "What is your favorite IPL team?" I promptly replied, "Sunrisers Hyderabad." His next query carried profound implications, "Why?" My response echoed my previous sentiment, "Because I was born in Hyderabad."

But then, Professor Swaminathan, in his inimitable manner, challenged me further. He asked, "Is your affection for our nation equivalent to your fondness for a sports franchise? Or does it run deeper?" At that moment, I found myself rendered speechless, confronted with the profound disparity between the two.

Inquisitive and eager to understand, I countered with a question of my own, "Sir, what fuels your love for India and your sense of pride in it?" It was in that moment that he introduced me to 'The Idea of India', an illuminating concept that transcends the confines of mere geographical boundaries and redefines the essence of nationhood.

With a simple gesture, Professor introduced me to the Preamble of the Indian Constitution. He read out, “We, the people of India, having solemnly resolved to constitute India into a sovereign socialist secular democratic republic and to secure to all its citizens:

Justice, social, economic and political;

Liberty of thought, expression, belief, faith, and worship;

Equality of status and opportunity;

And to promote among them all fraternity assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the Nation.”

In his wise words, he emphasized that this is the India he takes immense pride in, a vision that, while not fully realized today, can be shaped and molded into a reality by the youth of this great nation.

And there was another facet of Professor's life that often fascinated me, his openness to embrace new technology. I vividly remember the day I brought a phone equipped with a front camera and a phone that could capture what we commonly call a "selfie." His eyes sparkled with curiosity as he marveled at the concept of taking a photograph of oneself. I eagerly showed him how to click a selfie, and we shared a memorable moment, preserving a snapshot of his infectious wonderment. While I taught him how to click a ‘selfie’, he taught me how to be ‘selfless’.

Endless conversations with Professor ignited the spark that led to the inception of Makers Hive, an endeavor founded with a resolute motto: "Technology for Social Change." Professor's belief in the four pillars of Agriculture, Health, Education, and Nutrition as the foundation of a better India became our guiding light. We chose to focus our energies on the realm of disability and, with unwavering determination, birthed KalArm - India's First Bionic Hand and a beacon of hope for thousands.

The last time I had the privilege of meeting him was just last year, a momentous occasion when I was embarking on a new journey of marriage. In our family tradition, the first wedding invitation card is ceremoniously presented to the divine, often in sacred places like Tirupati. However, my heart led me on a different path. I chose to visit my beloved guru, Swaminathan sir, and personally handed him that cherished wedding card.

As I reflect on the treasured memories of our interactions and the indelible lessons he imparted, I find myself overwhelmed by a profound sense of loss. Swaminathan sir's presence had been a guiding light in my life, a source of wisdom, inspiration, and unwavering support. His absence leaves an irreplaceable void that words cannot fully encapsulate.

But today, as tributes cascade in from scientists, politicians, celebrities, students, and ordinary citizens alike, it becomes undeniably clear to me that this is not a time for mourning but a moment to celebrate his life. Swaminathan sir’s legacy persists in every soul inspired by his unwavering dedication to making a difference in society.

Swaminathan sir lived a life that exemplified excellence in every conceivable facet. He was not just a phenomenal scientist but a great father, an exceptional husband, a tireless humanitarian, a devoted patriot, and a conscientious global citizen. His sphere of influence extended far beyond the confines of agricultural research to encompass pressing issues of gender equality, environment, education etc. Awards and accolades seemed insufficient to recognize the sheer magnitude of his contributions to humanity.

The most profound homage we can offer this extraordinary soul is to contribute, in our own humble ways, to the causes that resided closest to his heart - farmers, the environment, education, and equality. In doing so, we ensure that his luminous spirit lives on, guiding us toward a future that is not just brighter but infinitely more equitable, a future that pays homage to the timeless wisdom and vision of Professor M S Swaminathan.
