Memorial Medical Minute - Fall 2023 Edition

It's officially Fall, and we're enjoying the crisp start to our mornings — even if the cooler air is gone by midday! In Coastal Mississippi, this season means more activity with festivals and celebrations, but it's also the perfect time to take a different type of action.

Prevention takes action, and your – or your loved one’s – mammogram can’t wait. If you have let fear of the unknown stop you from getting a mammogram before, know that our trained and compassionate medical professionals make the screening as comfortable as possible for you.

Don't let cost be a reason you or your loved one doesn’t get screened. Memorial offers mammograms at a reduced rate. Call (228) 867-4095 to schedule your screening and learn more about financial assistance.

PREVENTION TAKES ACTION: ADRIENNE'S BREAST CANCER JOURNEY

In 2021, Adrienne had a clear mammogram. She shares, “My journey started unexpectedly. I chose to go for a breast lift surgery, and at that time, I signed for pathology, which I almost didn’t do. I asked the nurse if I needed to do pathology since I had a clear mammogram last year. At my one-week post-op check, the surgeon told me I had breast cancer. I was extremely shocked because I had been there for elective surgery.”?

MEMORIAL NURSE SECURES FIRST SAFE HAVEN BABY BOX IN MISSISSIPPI

“You have to be on fire for it,” Caitlin says, as she describes her family’s passion for giving parents an anonymous option to safely surrender their infants.

Caitlin is a Registered Nurse in one of Memorial’s infusion clinics, and her husband, Steve, is a Nurse Practitioner in Memorial’s ICU.

Not only do Caitlin and Steve have biological children, but they have also adopted and fostered children for several years, always feeling called to help parents in crisis. The couple has been the driving force in securing the first Safe Haven Baby Box in Mississippi.

Safe Haven Baby Boxes take the face-to-face interaction out of infant surrender and protect the parent from being seen (shbb.org). These climate-controlled boxes are installed in fire stations, hospitals, and emergency response facilities. When a baby is placed in the box, multiple alarms are sounded to alert the first response personnel.

TRANSCATHETER VALVE REPLACEMENT CLINIC OPENS

Congratulations to members of Memorial’s structural heart team for successfully performing its first two TAVR procedures!

Memorial Health System has opened its Transcatheter Valve Replacement (TAVR) program at Memorial Hospital Gulfport.

Today, patients who have severe aortic stenosis and are experiencing symptoms have two options to replace their aortic valve: TAVR (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) or open-heart surgery (also known as surgical aortic valve replacement or SAVR). TAVR is a less invasive procedure that doesn't require open heart surgery. The most common technique involves inserting a tiny needle in the blood vessels in the leg, advancing a catheter (hollow plastic tube) through these blood vessels to replace your diseased valve while your heart is still beating.?

A referral from a cardiologist or a consult with The Valve Clinic is needed. The Valve Clinic is located in the Memorial Medical Office Building in Suite 320. Learn more about Memorial Health System’s TAVR program by clicking the button below or by calling (228) 575-2415.?
