The original inspiration for "little free libraries" in residential yards was generated by a Wisconsin craftsman as a commemorative tribute to his mother. Recognizing her lifelong penchant for reading books and her role as a school teacher, he designed a replicated schoolhouse structure to contain books for the local community to share.  This "curbside literacy" concept has flourished throughout the country and the world, beyond the memorial realm and even spawning an inclusive website to support similar projects and direct readers to this type of resource.
