Memorial Day...Extending the Honor throughout the Year

Memorial Day...Extending the Honor throughout the Year

On the heels of the national day of remembrance for those who sacrificed so much so we could have so much, it is a great time to reflect on the relationships that are important to each of us. Family, friends, and those special people who have made a difference in our lives come to mind. While we should take the time to appreciate those we are connected to personally, we should not lose sight of those we connect to professionally as well.

Over the years I have met some amazing people who have influenced my decision making, my interaction with others, and my sense of purpose as both an employee and a business person. My arrogance sometimes allows me to think that I evolved to my place in the world on my own, but the truth is much different from that. I remember that college professor who challenged me to think beyond the obvious. I smile when I think about how my grandfather lit up a room with a smile and a joke. I still take the time to say "thanks" to everyone who lends a hand because one of my colleagues was so intentional about doing that. These are the things that influenced me the most, yet there is no holiday that celebrates that.

So, as we roll into the summer months ahead, seek opportunities to engage warmly with others in a meaningful way. Learning and applying the technical skills of your job or profession is important, but take note of the common personal traits of those who are successful. I'm confident you will notice things that you can weave into your lifestyle both personally and professionally; and, pass it along to those who are watching you without you even noticing.
