Memorial Day: A Time for Reverence and Respect

Memorial Day: A Time for Reverence and Respect

As a veteran, I feel compelled to share a message that weighs heavily on my heart. Today, on the eve of Memorial Day, while many are celebrating the three-day weekend, let's take a moment to truly understand the essence of this day.

There's nothing "happy" about Memorial Day. This day is not a celebration but a somber reminder of the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives. It's not a holiday in the traditional sense; it's a day of remembrance, a time to reflect on their courage and dedication.

If you really want to grasp the true meaning of this day, visit Arlington or your local VA or Veterans Cemetery. Stand in the silence, read the names etched on the gravestones, and let their stories touch your soul. This isn’t the time for theme parks or distractions—this is a moment for reverence and respect.

Think of the real heroes: Audie Murphy, Chesty Puller, Chris Kyle, Dakota Meyer, George Patton, Herbert Pililaau, Kyle Carpenter, Michael Murphy, Rafael Peralta, and Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe, among countless others whose bravery is forever etched in our history. Let's honor them, not through political discourse, but through shared stories of their valor. Attend a Bell Ceremony or a Roll Call, where each name is read aloud and a bell is tolled to honor their memory. Let your tears be your tribute. It's in these moments of collective grief and respect that we truly honor their memory.

Believe me, I understand the weight of this day. I've carried the memories and the weight of comrades lost—Warriors who now stand their post with God. Their sacrifice is a burden I bear daily, shaping who I am.

Remember the fallen for all the good they did while they walked among us. Their legacy is a guiding light, urging us to live lives worthy of their sacrifice. And as you reflect, reach out to a veteran. We lose too many in times of "peace." Let them know they are not alone, that their service is cherished and remembered.

Finally, gather with loved ones for that BBQ. But before you eat, circle up and say a prayer. Raise a glass to the Brothers and Sisters who are no longer with us. Let the silence speak for them, feel the weight of their absence. Then, cherish the company of those still here. Celebrate life, for it is the gift they fought to protect.

In these moments of reflection and gratitude, we honor the true spirit of Memorial Day. Let's never forget.

Thank you for your service, Charlie.
