Memorial Day, a time for honoring

Hello to all of you. I wanted to take just a short bit of time to remember those that have lost their lives either in service to our country or have lost their lives because of service to our country. Our country is truly blessed because of the sacrifices that have been made. Jesus said that there is no greater love than to give your life for others. Since shortly after the civil war we as a nation have been honoring our fallen loved ones, our brothers, sisters, husbands and wives, uncles, aunts, our friends and neighbors.

Sometimes serving our nation comes with a huge cost and paying that cost leaves extremely large wholes in oh so many hearts. I pray that you have a fantastic and blessed Memorial Day as you go about remembering those that you know that have given their lives serving our country. I am left wondering, what can we do. What can we do that will help? Is there something that we love about our country that we would love to see more of? I for one, choose to think about honoring those that gave their lives in service to our country by looking to enhance that which I think is the best of our country.

Hi Michael, thank you for your kind words. I find it interesting that you chose to answer the question of what do you love about our country by paring country down to community. I too am very community oriented. I often find myself in some anguish when I find our communities so divided. This division seems to be the very antithesis of loving our country so much that one would lay their life down to help serve. Understanding this though I often look at how Grand Canyon University is choosing to serve the community around it. Often when we think of large organizations we do not see this type of Servant Leadership being practiced as it relates to community. Grand Canyon University should be congratulated for reaching out to the local community in so many different ways, from repairing homes to offering scholarships to neighborhood children, wow.? But this all might be why you chose to talk about community, like hearts.

Hi James, I am late to the ball on this post, but it was beautifully written. Personally, I adore the sense of community that we all have the ability to create and to access in this country. Sometimes the things that bind us together are difficult to recognize when we focus on the things that separate us. However, I believe we all have the power to reverse that narrative. When we do, we find that we are all bound to community by mutual love, sacrifice, and duty. Thank you to those who have served that we might continue to develop and cultivate that community.
