Memorial Day Reflections

This weekend, we remember those who sacrificed in the service of our country. We also remember those who are still struggling and fighting. We are losing more soldiers and veterans here than we did overseas, due to suicide and substance use disorder. To me, Memorial Day is also about them and their families. But this is also a time to appreciate what we have and the people around us.
When I first left the military, I would get frustrated about people not appreciating the somber nature of Memorial Day. I then thought of friends I’ve lost, both overseas and against the demons they fought after they returned home. Would they have wanted those of us still around to be depressed thinking about them?
The answer I came to was “no.” They would want us to live our lives to the fullest and comfort those they left behind. We can honor those we’ve lost by taking care of those still here -by spending time with those we love and care about, and by being there for our Gold Star families, especially those who lost their loved ones to suicide and substance use.
This year, in particular, we have an opportunity and obligation to ensure fellow veterans, service members, and their families do not feel isolated. “Community” has a different meaning for us. We honor those who gave everything, but we still have a duty to take care of those who are still fighting the battles here at home.
Enjoy your families and those around you this Memorial Day. Bottom line, take care of each other.
