Memorial Day Message

I thought it would be appropriate to share my Memorial Day message to my staff today.

I hope everyone is doing well today. 

I know many including yours truly is travelling this weekend to be with family and friends .

So be patient on the roads . There is no shortage of traffic.

I know that Memorial Day has become what most people think is the beginning of summer. 

For me,  what’s still important is paying our respects to the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom.

A year ago I had the opportunity to visit Normandy in France .  I must say it became quite emotional to really recognize the sacrifice our soldiers gave to liberate Europe.

One particular location,  Point Du Hoc really put in in perspective.  225 American rangers had to climb a 90 foot cliff , and this cliff was straight up.

To put the cliff in perspective the green wall at Fenway is 37.5 feet. 

Their objective was to take out six German cannons which had the ability to fire on American ships and landing craft that were part of the D-Day invasion.

While climbing the cliff they were being shot at by German soldiers.  They accomplished their objective , however only 95 of the 225 survived.

What sacrifice!  The rangers have been remembered in a few movies , however I’m not sure we truly recognize the odds against them and what they accomplished.

So today , I recognize the 225 American Rangers and especially the 130 that gave their lives in the defense of our Freedom. You will never be forgotten!
