I had the honor of speaking at Minneapolis Lakewood Cemetery on Memorial Day. Lakewood is an old and well regarded cemetery on the hills overlooking Lake Calhoun. It is also the final resting place of many of the most prominent of the city. The theme for the day was the observance of the 100th anniversary of the U.S. involvement in the First World War. Just a week later was the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the fierce BATTLE OF BELLEAU WOOD (June 6, 1918 - June 26, 1918). I knew of one Minneapolis Marine who died on June 6 in the wheat field and whose body the family brought home (3 years later). SERGEANT STEPHEN SHERMAN. Also buried in Lakewood is LIEUTENANT BERT BASTON, who was badly wounded on June 6 in the wheat field, but managed to survive and make it home.
The audio of my address and a photo of Stephen Sherman can be seen at my website https://freedomhistory.com/memorial-day-address-minneapolis-lakewood-cemetery-2018/
