Membrane Bioreactor Configuration
There are two distinct modes in which membrane bioreactors can be categorized: internal and external.
In the external configuration, membranes are linked to a bioreactor, and a pump is utilized to recirculate the liquid between the two vessels. Typically, this mode is employed to recover products continuously. As an alternative to external membrane bioreactors, internal configuration reduces energy expenses. Energy is effectively eradicated from the bioreactor by submerging the membranes in the liquid recirculation process.
In contrast to their external counterparts, internal membrane bioreactors necessitate more expansive surface areas and face a significant obstacle in the form of fouling. For the purpose of averting fouling of membranes, coarse bubble agitation may be utilized. The application of internal membrane bioreactors in wastewater treatment is widespread.
