Meltwater’s Internal Mobility Program Helps Employees Switch Career Direction

We launched a newly formalized process for internal employee mobility, which is designed to enable people to move across the company as a way to grow their careers. This could be moving to a new team or role, a new location, or both. The program gives universal access to all the open roles within Meltwater and guides people through a consistent and equitable process to ensure merit-based people decisions.

It enables us to build an equitable internal talent market and retain skilled employees who share the same values as us, often with many years worth of product and industry expertise.

Multiple Meltwater employees have already taken advantage of the program to pivot to new career paths, such as Krysta Gahagen, Product Marketing Manager.

After five years with Meltwater, Krysta felt it was time for a change and wanted to return to a role in product marketing. She had been working in Enterprise Client Success for five years with Scoopit, Linkfluence, and Meltwater, and before that, she worked as a Product Marketer for two years in the social media management space.?

But, Krysta decided it was time for another change, so she spoke to her manager about an internal job switch. “When my manager asked me about my goals for the next year, I highlighted that I wanted to get involved with the product marketing team. There were some open roles in that team, and I had a skill-set that matched their requirements, so that got the ball rolling.”

Krysta has now fully transitioned to her new role on the product marketing team, thanks to the well-defined process that the internal mobility program lays out for employees. Let’s explore that process…

Seamlessly Switching Career Path

We’ve tried to make the process as simple as possible. Employees looking for a change just need to speak to their manager before applying for any internal opportunity that they feel qualified for.?

Krysta explains: “I spoke to my manager and the director who was recruiting, and then applied for the position on Meltwater’s internal jobs board. The Talent Attraction team reached out pretty quickly to make sure that all of us were on the same page and to go through those initial steps of determining my eligibility.”

The policy is designed to ensure complete transparency for everybody involved, including the employee, so they have a clear view of progress. “I felt like there was a lot of clarity right from the start. I knew where I stood in the process and what the next steps would be.”?

One of the benefits of changing roles internally is that you don’t need to work through a notice period before you can get started on your new role. Krysta was able to transition to her new job much more easily, wrapping up responsibilities from her previous position whilst taking her first steps in the new role at a pace that worked for everybody.?

Another advantage of Meltwater’s Internal Mobility program is that it’s much easier for people to scope out a new job before making a decision. “I had a great relationship with my old manager, and I wasn’t going to make a move that would put me in a worse situation, so it was reassuring to know my new manager has a great reputation.”? The program also actively supports employees in making informed decisions by enabling Discovery Conversations between the employee and hiring manager before the formal application.

After spending months in her new role, Krysta has no regrets about taking advantage of the Meltwater Internal Mobility program. “I think it's natural for people to look at different jobs after they’ve been in the same place for a while. The internal mobility program gave me the chance to stay with an organization that I know and want to be part of while finding a new role that really interests me.
