This morning thyssenkrupp and Tata Steel announced to form a joint-venture. Just a brief information about M&A in the steel industry:
- Since the mid 1980s, almost 8'000 deals had been announced with a value of almost 1 trillion USD. Since a peak in the years 2006 to 2008 consolidation had slowed down (see graph above).
- The most frequent acquirers in this industry seems to be Nippon Steel Corporation with more than 30 acquisitions since 1985 followed by Gerdau SA from Brazil and Baoshan Iron & Steel Co.
Interesting to note that the steel industry has been at the center of creating the M&A industry as such - with Andrew Carnegie and later J. P. Morgan leading to the formation of US Steel.
