Is Melatonin Safe for children? A Growing Concern

Many parents turn to melatonin, an over-the-counter supplement, to help their children sleep. However, health officials are increasingly concerned about the long-term effects of melatonin use in children.

Melatonin supplements, a synthetic form of the hormone, have been used for years as sleep aids. Yet, doctors advise caution, especially for children under five, and recommend against routine use for those without sleep disorders. The question remains: Is melatonin safe for children?

Some studies suggest that melatonin can affect puberty-related hormones, highlighting the need for further research. Additionally, not all melatonin brands are alike, adding to the uncertainty.

Alarming statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveal a 530% increase in reports to poison control centers for accidental melatonin ingestion among children from 2012 to 2021. In 2024 alone, there were approximately 11,000 pediatric emergency room visits due to melatonin ingestion. It's important to note that melatonin is not FDA-approved and doesn't require childproof packaging.

A recent case saw Child Protective Services (CPS) intervene after a child ingested melatonin gummies, leading to an investigation and the requirement for all children’s medicines to be locked away. Was this an overreaction, or should medicines, especially those appealing to children, always be stored securely?

I'd love to hear your thoughts or experiences on this matter. Has anyone else faced similar concerns?
