Mehtaphysical Musings: Taylor Swift + Unicorn Bubbles Popping

Mehtaphysical Musings: Taylor Swift + Unicorn Bubbles Popping

We’ve all memorized the lyrics to Tay Tay’s “All Too Well” by now (or maybe that’s just me?), but have you ever wondered what would happen if Taylor wrote a break up song about a Unicorn Founder and a Venture Capitalist? Just me again? Either way, I’ve never been more fired up for a parody song than this one… Between the economy, SVB, and all the quirks of remote work, there was a lot to work with. Let me know what you think, and please, if you have Taylor’s cell number, let’s get her in touch with my Marketing team so she can be a cameo in our next parody platinum hit.

Such an incredible production comes on the heels of our 10-year anniversary for Pulse! We have surprises just as shocking (and hopefully just as fun) as our parody video—not to mention everything you’ll need to know about Digital Customer Success and how AI will turbocharge CS at scale.

Here are some Pulse resources for you as we get ready for May 17 & 18 at the Moscone Center:

  • Register for Pulse here, if you haven’t yet.
  • Check out our philanthropy program’s (Pulse Impact’s) anonymous survey here. Last year, Robin Merritt led an incredible discussion on DEI in tech, and we’d love your help making this year’s just as impactful.
  • Join the virtual Pulse party on our Community webpage here, so we can count down the days and celebrate together!

MY TOP 10 MISTAKES IN 10 YEARS: GAINSIGHT CEO NICK MEHTA

“I never make the same mistake twice. I make it 5 or 6 times, just to be sure.” - Random quote I found on the Internet.

If that doesn’t describe the CEO experience, I don’t know what does.

In February 2023, I hit my 10-year anniversary (or “Gainaversary,” as we say) of running Gainsight. After receiving my gold watch and Silicon Valley AARP card, I had a chance to reflect on a decade of community-building, cheesy music videos, and Customer Success.

But much more interesting than the short list of Kodachrome-colored successes that are easy to recall are the gloomier-toned failures I try to forget. While I struggled to produce 10 things I got right in a decade, the list of mistakes flowed much easier. Here are my 10 greatest (worst?) hits, in no particular order:

  • Mistake #1: Not holding my leaders to the highest standard.
  • Mistake #2: On the other hand… not betting on the team that got me there.
  • Mistake #3: Not scaling based upon leading indicators.
  • Mistake #4: Not standardizing pricing and related systems early.
  • Mistake #5: Not investing in Digital Customer Success early.
  • Mistake #6: Not parting ways well always.
  • Mistake #7: Not being prescriptive enough, early enough.
  • Mistake #8: Not starting Act II fast enough.
  • Mistake #9: Not being patient and not ignoring FOMO.
  • Mistake #10: Not being myself.
