Megatrends today and my work predictions!

???????? ?????? ?????? ???????????????????? ?????????? ???????? ???????? ???????????? ?????? ?????????????

How will our work be impacted?

While the trending topic for the last two years has been #workfromhome, there is much more to the economy and work than just working from home/anywhere.

The last two years have accelerated how we think of the future of work. A lot has happened but I believe it is only a glimpse of what could happen. As if the last two years were getting us ready for the future.

Now, I am no expert on the topic. Nor do I have research backing what I am saying.

But I do have a curious mind and I interact with a lot of people. And I read and observe. I bring all of this together as I attempt to gaze at the crystal ball.

So, what are the #megatrends today that will become our future?

1. Gig work and Utility Services Economy

This is already underway and is accelerated by the Pandemic. More people will own small or single-person businesses. Vocational work will get organised and people will take pride in being a carpenter or electrician as it will pay well too.

Delivery services are here to stay and could become multi-platform. I am certain that utility service providers will grow and spread across the country.

Companies such as #UrbanCompany are early movers and could benefit.

2. Continued upskilling and adjacent career shifts

We will see far fewer defined and structured jobs. Upskilling and upgradation will be very normal. I can already see my generation has up to three careers. This will go up to maybe five with a new skillset added every five to ten years.

Adjacent career shifts will be normalised and mostly successful.

Companies such as #linkedin, #Coursera, #udemy and #Upgrad etc have already made a splash and this trend will continue. I also expect micro-skill platforms to come up.

3. Science will make a comeback

The world waited with bated breath for a Vaccine. If we are in a better space today, we have science to thank. I am predicting that deep work in science, health, healing, and longevity will be at the forefront.

I am hoping society can pay and honour scientists more than movie stars, singers, and sportspeople eventually.

4. Quality and Productivity in Healthcare, Education, and Agriculture

Quality and Productivity will expand across sectors. Finally. Quality and productivity has benefited the manufacturing and services industry immensely. I can see it expanding across key sectors such as Healthcare, Education, and Agriculture.

In all these cases early detection and intervention are critical. Healthcare is best when illness is prevented. Education is best when all children have access to quality primary and middle schools. Agriculture is productive if early-stage pests are avoided and more crop per unit of land is possible.

I am certain we will be growing more food with less water and soil. Vertical and water-based agriculture is a revolution waiting to happen. And this will open the gates for new work.

5. A green tomorrow.

Focus on Green and Sustainability will drive our work choices. This includes where we work from, how we travel, materials we use, recycling and much more.

Apart from EV and other sustainable fuel trends, I expect that the human race will buy less and buy for longer-term use.

I know much of the above is more a prediction for the world and not specifically work. But both are deeply connected. Our choices at work are connected to what happens to the world. Hence the expanded scope of my views.

Which of these predictions do you think is most likely? Would you add more to the list? Any that you disagree with?

Thanks for sharing Anshuman. well written. IN areas 1 & 2 I'm fully convinced You described future. In chapter 3 I believe shift already happened but only for population with certain degree of education while mainstream and lower part of society spectrum are with the values somewhere else while history gives us a lot of evidence values changes is not happening as quick as scientists & group of top intelligence would deserve. One of the reasons is low to no learnability in that segment after finishing studies. As outcomes of changed described in hcapters4&5 I believe we will see new segment of population with higher age but still productive which will introduce new segment of economy -Silver economy which is the topic for separate blog I believe :-).
