"Meta-Tasking" Not "Multi Tasking"
Multi tasking is a convenient myth. It can be tough to understand why, but I will give you 4 examples proving why Mega Tasking is superior to Multi Tasking. Learn why when it comes to Mega Tasking vs Multitasking – Mega Tasking wins.
1. Distracted Driving Kills
How many times have you written "multitasking" on your resume? It sure sounds cool, but NPR said that "Multitasking is a Myth." (https://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=95256794). Why? Your brain does not really crunch data simultaneously, very well. Instead, what you are actually doing is completing small tasks, extremely quickly. The proof is "distracted driving." Your motor vehicle takes time to stop. If you are doing your makeup while driving, you won't be able to hit your brakes in time before hitting that semi-truck, which swerved to miss the cat. The US highway patrol calculated that distracted driving cost 3,450 lives in 2016 alone (https://www.nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/distracted-driving). When you are distracted, you cannot concentrate fully. Just think about your lack of concentration when your children are screaming. Have you ever tried to complete a phone interview with your children screaming in your ear? That would drive anyone crazy. Full technology adaption includes understanding how your brain works: Neuroscience. Mega Tasking removes distractions.
2. Talking While Writing Emails
Your brain is like your car. If you have one family car, then only one family member can use it at a time. If father has the car at work, your daughter cannot use it for her cheerleader practice. The same is true for your brain. You have one brain and Neuroscience explains that you use different parts of your brain to process different types of information. Your brain cannot do it all. "People can't multitask very well, and when people say they can, they're deluding themselves," said Neuroscientist Earl Miller of MIT. He discusses "interference" when two tasks involve a similar brain process, like communication. He said that talking on the phone while composing an email is very difficult because both involve communication. Your brain can focus on one task involving communication at a time. If you try to fill something with too much information, you get "Information Overload," confusion and fatigue. Your "InBox is full." Neuroscience teaches us that the brain prioritizes tasks based on their perceived importance. You are not really working on multiple tasks at one time. Mega Tasking does not overload your mind.
3. Three Children: Three Different Faves
Of course, we all want to get more done faster in a shorter amount of time, but if we are not organized, we can become unsettled. Depression and multitasking are killing our productivity. A key goal of self improvement is to understand how your brain works. Research from the University of Sussex has discovered a correlation between emotional illnesses and depression. This showed a lower level of brain grey matter with those who use more media devices simultaneously. Lower levels of grey matter are associated with depression. Another study said 25% of American women are on antidepressant medication. Sure, the feminists have promised that all women can multi task and become Wonder Woman, but balancing family and career will naturally cause more stress. Switching tasks lowers productivity. Think about a workout routine. Let us say that you want to do 30 minutes on the stationary bike, 30 minutes on stair climbing and 30 sit ups. Do you do 1 minute on the stationary bike, then go to a different exercise? Of course not. Switching tasks takes time, energy and causes you to lose momentum. Think about the message, you are sending your brain: "Do this." Once your brain has finally prepared to do that task, you switch to another. This causes your mind and body to become confused. You want to push your muscles to the limit to get real results. That is impossible if you do not do enough reps to "feel the burn." When you are at peak performance that is the best time to concentrate on one task at a time. Here is a test. What would be the most efficient usage of your time if you had three children - Mary, John and Robert - each of whom had a different preference for food, clothing and music? How would you take care of their needs, over three days? What should you do on the first day? Cook up all the food items the first day. Buy all the clothing the second day. Purchase the music the third day. Doesn't that make sense? Think of all the gasoline, time and energy wasted if you tried to cook, shop and find music simultaneously. When you cook everything up on one day, you are engaging in superior Mega Tasking efficiency. Mega Tasking optimizes limited resources.
4. Startup Support Functionality
How do I manage multiple businesses at the same time without losing my mind? Mega Tasking focuses on removing distractions. Don't open up multiple, unrelated programs simultaneously. Streamline tasks to keep those of a similar nature together. How does this work in the real world of project management? If I have 5 companies that need start up management assistance, I lump the functions together. Therefore on Day 1, I work on marketing and promotional material for all 5 companies. On Day 2, I might work on processes for all 5 companies. This allows for my brain to concentrate on one "functionality" at a time. Then, I can apply these concepts to each company, one at a time. It is like washing multiple cars on the same day. Mega Tasking optimizes concentration. Mega Tasking removes distractions, does not overload your brain, optimizes limited resources and allows you to properly concentrate. When you optimize the power of your mind, then you can achieve more. According to futurist technology adaption philosophy - Your brain does not multitask well, but it does Mega Task well.
