This week, I've written a detailed article about Airbnb's future, and I'd love to hear your thoughts. (Read the article here and then comment?on LinkedIn here). In the piece, I analyze a recent speech by Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky and make some predictions about where the company is heading in 2023.
From offering housing options for Gen Z to potentially launching an App Store-like marketplace for guests and hosts, my article covers a range of topics related to Airbnb's future direction. Please take a look and let me know what you think.
Best regards,
Founder, Rental Scale-Up
P.S.: Sorry for the low-quality how-to videos I shared last week. I've re-recorded the most popular one on creating listing descriptions with ChatGPT AI , now with better quality and four demos. From simple to targeted content using different input types.

Top article this week???
Airbnb CEO participated earlier this week in a Technology Media & Telecom Conference organized by Morgan Stanley. I’ve summarized the significant points while linking them to the latest Airbnb products and programs. I also share a few guesses about where Airbnb is heading, from providing housing options to Gen Zs to launching an App Store-like marketplace for guests and hosts.
What was Airbnb before the pandemic?
Airbnb primarily focused on budget travel with accommodations averaging $100-$110 per night, primarily for short-term stays in urban areas. It had limited presence in vacation rental markets and did not target higher-end price points
What is Airbnb today? A company moving beyond travel with a focus on inspiring, matching, and connecting.
Airbnb is in the business of inspiring
For instance, Airbnb uses Airbnb Categories to position itself as a travel inspiration platform and increase user engagement. It aims to be top-of-mind for travelers throughout their journey and drive more bookings for hosts.
Airbnb is in the business of matching
Airbnb uses machine learning and data analysis to match guests with suitable listings from its 6.6 million offerings, and continues to refine its algorithm for accurate recommendations as it expands into new categories.
Airbnb is in the business of establishing a system of trust to get strangers to live together.
Airbnb's expanded offerings now include housing listings, with the launch of an Airbnb-friendly apartment marketplace that allows renters to list their apartments on Airbnb to offset rent costs. This partnership showcases Airbnb's evolution from a travel platform to a marketplace where people can find a place to live.

What Airbnb is not: Booking.com!
Booking.com offers flight bookings, iterative testing, loyalty program, and costly marketing. Brian Chesky, Airbnb's CEO, believes focusing on inspiring travelers, following a single roadmap, not offering loyalty programs, and investing in a strong brand differentiates Airbnb from Booking.com.
What is Airbnb’s immediate future?
A Zillow-like platform where Gen Zs can find places for short-stays and long-term housing? With a subscription model?
Airbnb aims to meet the needs of young adults seeking short-term and long-term housing solutions. Possible expansions include offering diverse housing options for extended periods, developing a subscription model, and matching roommates to share apartments. Airbnb has already developed a marketplace for apartment-friendly rentals and launched the "Airbnb Live and Work Anywhere" initiative to promote destinations friendly to remote work and digital nomads.
A marketplace of free and paid services for hosts and guests?
Airbnb may create a marketplace of free and paid services for hosts and guests, building on previous initiatives like Host Assist. Hosts and guests could add services from an "Airbnb Marketplace," including free services like background checks, and paid services provided by either Airbnb or third-party companies. Airbnb has already launched a paid travel insurance product and sees a significant opportunity for a suite of services offered through a third-party app store. The goal is to add more value for hosts and guests while exploring new revenue streams.
