Get Noticed at Web Meetings!
Meetings can be tough.
The ones with eight or more people are the worst. In the “old world” where people attended in person, folks doodled. Laptops allowed them to look busy. Next came smartphones - from a furtive sneak to full-fledged media browsing. All of us have done it, right?
The world has flipped with Covid- countless hours on Zoom and similar forums. What does one do? Do we help everyone by switching off cameras “to conserve bandwidth”? Or are we handling two screens at once- especially if you’re not the one presenting?
Quite likely, if one feels that the matter is not relevant, one will switch off- but still remain in the meeting. But think, why have you been invited in if you’re going only to play your part? Is there an opportunity to be leveraged?
I learnt a trick or two in cross-functional meetings:
- Show interest in another colleague’s domain and this person will reciprocate when it’s your turn to speak. And who does not need support in a meeting?
- The meetings are a good opportunity to pick up skills and knowledge from other domains e.g. a marketeer picking up the nuances of finance or supply chain. It sets you up well for larger general management roles where a broader perspective across multiple domains are needed.
- And, of course, you get noticed: by the boss and others who matter
So, how could one bring these to bear in a Web meeting world? What’s worked for you?

Great insights Shraman! Living this world these days. One trick I would add is to dress up well (as you would for a physical meeting) even if you are remote. That has personally helped me be more mentally alert.
