Teamwork happens in meetings. That’s the conventional wisdom. It’s still, largely, true. But the world has gotten very proficient at asynchronous and virtual work, so we need to tweak our understanding of what meeting formats support great teamwork. What’s the best way for your team to meet depends a lot on your individual team and what its purpose is. There are, however, some best practices across all teams.?

  • Building trust happens most naturally and quickly in person. Plan for it.
  • Differentiate meetings by content: hold strategic meetings for deeper topics and operational meetings for execution.
  • Daily huddles can help teams gel behaviorally and are quite effective for project implementation.
  • Recap decisions and next steps before adjourning.
  • Align on cascading messages before adjourning … and make sure everyone cascades to their teams.?
