"The greatest thing is not to believe in Santa Claus; it is to be Santa Claus."?— Pat Boone
The season of Secret Santa is here. Santa Claus comes to us in very different forms. He does not always have to be roly poly in a red dress & with a white beard & come on a sleigh. He is there amongst us & ready to bring joy in the way we least expect & help us!
I have met? Santa. This meeting happened a few years ago when I was flying out to the US form Bengaluru . It was the first time that I was taking a long flight all alone. My brother in the US had booked my ticket. My family came to see me off & once they saw me in they left. As the queue moved quickly, soon it was my turn. When the person on the counter checked my ticket, she said that the copy of the credit card, I had was not the one with which the ticket was booked. I was nervous. The lady at the counter called a few of her colleagues who had left for the day. She asked me to speak? to my family & ask them to call my brother & do the needful & get the copy to the airport. My family, I knew had not carried their mobile phones as it was the late night flight , they were still on their way back home. My brother’s phone, when I tried, was going onto the answering machine. I realised I could not give the public telephone number if he picked up. I almost gave up hope as it was half an hour into trying the number & I was not able to speak to him.
As I was desperately looking around, almost giving up hope, an officer walked up to me & asked me if I needed help. I told him my predicament. He took me towards his locked office cabin, opened the door and asked me to try my brother’s number as he had a fax machine in his office. This time I was lucky. He was kind enough to give his fax number for me to ask my brother to fax his credit card copy. Within a matter of minutes, the problem was solved. It was Christmas Eve and? I knew I? had met Santa Claus!?I thanked him & went towards the counter. As I turned back, I saw that he had locked his cabin and was gone!
"Seeing isn't believing. Believing is seeing" is a phrase that highlights how belief shapes our perception of reality. Our expectations, faith, or mindset often influence how we see the world around us, rather than simply accepting what we can physically observe.
In the case of Santa Claus, this quote fits perfectly. As children, we are told stories about Santa Claus—his reindeer, his sleigh, his magical abilities, and his visit on Christmas Eve. However, Santa doesn't leave concrete, physical evidence of his visit. Yet, children believe in Santa because of what they’ve been told, the gifts , the joy of the tradition, and the magic of Christmas.
For those who believe, seeing Santa's presence isn't necessary—they can feel his spirit in the excitement, the presents, and the festive atmosphere. The belief in Santa gives them the ability to "see" his magic in the world, even if no actual Santa Claus appears in the flesh.
For believers, the magic is real, because it’s what we experience in the world. Without the belief, the magic wouldn’t exist. So, in the case of Santa Claus: Believing in Santa allows you to see the magic he brings in the most unexpected ways. The spirit of Santa Claus is a reminder that sometimes the most enduring truths are those that are felt, shared, and passed on rather than those that are literal. It encourages us to focus on the deeper meaning behind the figures and traditions that we hold dear.
That night , I experienced that magical moment with Santa Claus. How about you? Would love to know if you have met Santa Claus or been Santa to anyone?
