Meeting Every Child Where They Are: The Importance of Tailored Learning
Fleet Education Services Ltd
Over 45 years of helping students reach their potential.
Alternative provision offers a unique approach to teaching and learning. For many learners, a more tailored, flexible and individualised approach is the key to their success, particularly for those learners with SEND. This is where Fleet Education Services steps in, offering bespoke one-to-one tuition that meets each learner exactly where they are, helping them to overcome barriers and rediscover a love for learning.
Why Alternative Provision Works
Alternative provision at Fleet Education Services focuses on each individual learner’s needs and the strategies required to re-engage them in learning. This approach is holistic and takes account of not just a learner’s needs but their interests, hobbies and aspirations. Unlike mainstream education, alternative provision allows for personalised learning plans and this approach to working with vulnerable, disengaged young people makes all the difference.
Trust is essential for engaging learners who may have faced significant barriers in mainstream school. By creating a safe and supportive environment, tutors can help learners not only improve academically but also rebuild their confidence and sense of self-worth.
Fleet Education Services’ Holistic Approach
At Fleet Education Services, we go above and beyond to ensure that each learner receives the tailored support they need. Our Alternative Provision team takes the time to meet both the learner and their carer in person to fully understand their unique circumstances, challenges and interests. Based on this information, we build a detailed profile of the learner which is then used to match them with the perfect tutor - someone who will not only help them succeed academically but also form a positive and lasting rapport.
Case Study: Laura’s Story
One of the best examples of the impact of a personalised alternative provision programme is the story of Laura, a 13-year-old who had been out of school for 18 months due to severe social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. Diagnosed with ADHD and exhibiting Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) traits, Laura struggled to engage in mainstream education and required a more personalised approach to learning.
The Challenge
Laura was eager to learn but found it difficult to trust people and build relationships. She needed a tutor who could provide 15 hours of weekly tuition in English, maths, and science at a level that matched her stage (KS2). However, she was wary of new people and initially cautious about starting tuition.

The Solution
Fleet Education Services paired Laura with a tutor named Danielle who began working with her for two hours per week. Danielle focused on building rapport with Laura, finding common ground and creating a safe space for her to learn. After just a few weeks, Laura was comfortable enough to increase her sessions to four hours per week. Over time, another tutor named Amanda joined the team, built on the success achieved by Danielle and ensured that Laura’s tuition time increased to meet her needs.
Danielle and Amanda worked closely with Laura, using creative and fun approaches to learning. They made sure to build her confidence by celebrating small successes and approaching feedback in a gentle and supportive manner. For Laura, who was anxious about making mistakes, this strategy was crucial for her continued engagement and growing resilience.
The Outcome
Laura’s attendance was 100% and her engagement in sessions was ‘excellent’. Over the course of seven months, she made incredible progress, going from working at a year 5/6 level in maths to meeting age-related expectations at KS3. Her confidence grew so much that she was able to re-enter a school setting part-time, attending two days a week while continuing her tuition with Danielle on the other days.
Laura’s father was extremely grateful for the support provided by Fleet Education Services. “Laura would be in a different place now, had it not been for Danielle. It’s likely that she wouldn’t have had contact with anyone, so I can’t thank Fleet and their tutors enough.”
Why This Matters
Laura’s story is just one of many that show the power of personalised, one-to-one education.
