Meeting with Dr. Theresa Cho: Innovating Healthcare for Ventura County

Today I had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Theresa Cho, the newly appointed Director of the Ventura County Health Care Agency (VCHCA), as part of the Ventura County Leadership Academy (VCLA) immersion activity. Dr. Cho’s extensive career and commitment to healthcare innovation are inspiring and our discussion provided valuable insights into how Ventura County is advancing public health.

One compelling initiative Dr. Cho shared was her work on improving care for diabetic patients. Recognizing that Ventura County does not have enough ophthalmologists to see the growing number of diabetic patients needing regular eye exams, Dr. Cho implemented a system using retinal scanners to screen patients. These images are then sent to specialists outside the county for analysis, ensuring that diabetic patients receive critical preventative care despite the shortage of local resources. This innovative use of technology allows for timely diagnosis and treatment, preventing complications that could lead to blindness.

We discussed Dr. Cho’s leadership in expanding access to care through Ventura County’s 34 clinics, which are strategically focused on ensuring underserved communities receive high-quality, patient-centered services. Her ability to balance operational efficiency while maintaining excellence in patient care is a model for effective healthcare management.

Looking ahead, Dr. Cho hopes to further integrate data-driven healthcare across Ventura County. One of her key goals is to use healthcare analytics to better understand population health trends and to optimize preventative care. By leveraging technology and health data, she envisions a more proactive healthcare system where patients are empowered to take charge of their health before chronic conditions worsen. Dr. Cho also aims to strengthen community partnerships and expand programs that reach vulnerable populations and enhancing mental health services.
