Meet your new digital colleague

Cognition.ai just dropped a new digital tool, Devin who is capable of handling a wide variety of software engineering tasks including end-to-end deployments, find and fix bugs, train and fine tune models, learning new technology, and even the most arduous task of maintaining mature repositories. (Read more about Devin on Cognition's Blog or watch the demo video directly.

What is the impact of tools like this to your teams?

As technology and product leaders, the introduction of AI tools like Devin into the workforce represents not just a technological leap but a strategic opportunity to rethink how we work. The advancements in AI, such as those demonstrated by Devin, signal a shift towards a more efficient, innovative, and human-centric approach to software engineering and product development.

The rapid adoption of generative AI (GenAI) technologies across HR functions, including recruiting, highlights a broader movement towards embracing AI for talent acquisition and internal skill development. Organizations are leveraging these technologies not just for administrative tasks but also for upskilling and reskilling their workforce, addressing the growing skills gap and aligning with employee expectations for career development. (SHRM's "2024 Talent Acquisition Trends Led by GenAI, Skills-Based Hiring ")

High-performing organizations, or AI high performers, already utilize GenAI more extensively across business functions, particularly in product and service development. These organizations view AI not as a means to reduce costs but as a tool to create new business models, enhance product offerings, and drive revenue growth. Their investment in AI is substantial, demonstrating a strategic approach to incorporating AI into their operations to gain a competitive edge. (McKinsey's "The state of AI in 2023: Generative AI’s breakout year ")

However, the adoption of AI also underscores the need for a shift in the workforce's skill set. Workers express concern over trust, relevance, and the ethical use of AI, highlighting the importance of improving understanding, access, and training in AI technologies. To leverage the benefits of AI fully, organizations must address these concerns, ensuring equitable access and fostering an environment where human skills, such as emotional intelligence and empathy, continue to be valued alongside technical AI skills. (Adecco Group's "Navigating the AI Revolution: Takeaways From the Global Workforce of the Future Report ")

HR leaders are pivotal in guiding this transition, advocating for a redesign of work processes to integrate AI effectively, focusing on talent development, and ensuring that jobs have meaning and fulfillment for employees in an AI-augmented workplace. (IBM's "New IBM study reveals how AI is changing work and what HR leaders should do about it ") This transformation is not without its challenges. There is a notable AI skills gap, with a significant demand for AI builders and translators who can bridge the gap between technical AI capabilities and business needs. (Deloitte Insights' "AI adoption in the workforce ")

To successfully navigate this evolving landscape, it's essential for leaders to adopt a structured approach to AI implementation, distinguishing reality from myths, focusing on AI's potential benefits, and ensuring that the workforce is prepared for the changes AI brings. (Gartner's "AI in HR: How AI Is Transforming the Future of HR ") By doing so, we can create a future where technology and people work in tandem, driving innovation and enhancing the value of the work we do.

Embracing AI tools like Devin with a learning mindset can transform the way we approach work, making us smarter, more efficient, and prepared for the future. As we integrate these tools into our workflows, we open the door to endless possibilities for creativity, innovation, and human-centric technology use.

Will be a brave organisation that trusts end to end software development and deployment to something like this for something non trivial/mission critical. Just look at how embarrassing simple chat bots can be and consider how exploitable through the software supply chain this could be....!

If devlin can do as it says, then it's won't be just software engineers that will be gone, but also all sass platforms. Why pay for something when an ai can just code that up for you in an instant?
