Meet Xylome
Comstock Fuels
Breakthrough cellulosic fuel technology and patented cellulosic feedstock processing solutions.
“By living sustainably while displacing extractive technologies,?we are?renewing tomorrow today”.
Xylome Corporation, located in Madison, WI, is a genetic engineering company that uses metabolic engineering to develop high value, sustainable products from non-conventional oleaginous yeasts, including novel lipids, palm oil substitutes, biochemicals, and enzymes. They have previously been awarded grants from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) , USDA , and National Science Foundation (NSF) , and they have earned two USDA Certified Biobased Product Labels for Xylome’s YOIL? White Fat Replacement for RBD-palm Oil and YOIL-Cream? Replacement for Emulsified RBD-Palm Oil.?
Xylome’s #biosynthesis methods are designed to increase the value and diversity of industrial fermentation products to contribute to sustainably resolving urgent global #resourcescarcity challenges at reduced cost and carbon intensity. ?
Industrial fermentation is a powerful and highly scalable process that produces very large #agricultural outputs for fractional #naturalresource inputs. Imagine sustainably filling global demand for palm oil without #deforestation and #ecosystem devastation by using yeast to produce a chemically identical product with a small fleet of highly profitable industrial fermentation facilities. Now imagine doing that twice to create massive volumes of a new #renewablefuel feedstock. That thinking underpins Xylome’s belief that we all “have it in our collective power to determine the outcome because what we do makes a difference,” a concept which deeply resonates with Comstock’s mission of enabling #systemicdecarbonization.?
President and founder Dr. Thomas Jeffries , Ph.D., is an expert in the development and propagation of oleaginous yeast with specific, unique experience with Xylome’s yeast strains and process. He has forty years of leadership experience in #microbial #biochemistry, #physiology, and #metabolic engineering of yeasts. Throughout his career, he directed research and development into renewable fuels, chemicals, and materials, and sustainable technologies. ?
Dr. Jeffries and his team will play a critical role in Comstock’s pending $2,000,000 DOE grant project by demonstrating commercially mature production of microbial oil by feeding Xylome’s proprietary lipogenic yeast with c6 sugars produced from woody biomass with Comstock Fuels ' patented process. That oil will be combined with Comstock’s proprietary #Bioleum? to become a feedstock for conventional renewable fuel #hydrotreating processes.?

This project proposes to?validate just one of many pathways utilizing Comstock’s process to produce fuel from woody biomass.?#Woodybiomass is a widely available, highly scalable, sustainable feedstock source that has the potential of neutralizing more than 40% of U.S. #mobilityemissions – including for the difficult to decarbonize long haul trucking and aviation sectors, while creating high-quality jobs, invigorating America’s rural communities, and making a material contribution to achieving the Biden Administration’s objective of delivering net-zero emissions by 2050.??
Thank you to Dr. Jeffries and his entire team at Xylome for their collaboration on this project and for their shared commitment to working to decarbonize our current transportation system.??
About Comstock Fuels ??
Comstock Fuels is a wholly owned subsidiary of?Comstock Inc. Comstock Fuels’ current proprietary cellulosic fuel technology converts woody biomass into C6 sugar and #Bioleum??, a unique blend of hydrocarbons. These intermediates can be further processed into renewable fuels and chemicals using existing #fermentation, hydrotreating, and #catalytic chemistries.?Our patented process uses commercially available equipment to pulp and separate wood into refined #biointermediates that are free of the inhibitors that have hindered prior commercial efforts, thereby unlocking a valuable and truly circular #bioeconomy.??
