Meet Viridiana Alcaraz, Lead Museum Experience Representative at the San José Museum of Art
San José Museum of Art
SJMA nurtures empathy and connection by engaging communities with socially relevant contemporary art.
Meet the staff behind the San José Museum of Art. This week we spotlight Viridiana Alcaraz Alvarez, who has been at SJMA for over 3 years. She is the Lead Museum Experience Representative (MER). She graduated from De Anza College with a liberal arts and letters degree and is currently an SJSU student, hoping to major in the arts.
What do you do at SJMA? I work in the front end of the museum selling tickets, memberships, and floating around the galleries to protect artwork and answer any questions visitors might have. My team's goal is to make sure our visitors have the best experience whether it be their first time at an art museum or if they're a consistent museum goer. My favorite thing about my job is that I get to look at artwork every day, it’s really cool! The MER team is very knowledgeable and super creative, so whenever you have a chance, come say hi to us in the galleries! ??
What are your favorite exhibitions and projects that you’ve worked on?? I think my favorite exhibitions at SJMA were probably Woody de Othello: Breathing Room and Undersoul: Jay Defeo. I really look up to local artists and these two are very well known in the Bay Area!
I really enjoy organizing and I have had a few projects that dealt with organization. I helped out the MER team with scanning drawings from our interpretation areas and archiving these documents online. I also helped the membership team connect with our members during shelter-in-place by sending out member newsletters!

What do you like best about SJMA??I love how SJMA prioritizes having community events and partnerships. It’s really cool to see how connected we are with the people around us.?
Do you have a creative practice or hobbies outside of SJMA that you would like to share??I love painting, doodling, and shooting film photos but I am still trying to look for new ways to make art. I create cartoonish characters that are mainly inspired from product logos, mascots, and hand-painted signage. My work captures the environments around me and the lifestyles of everyday people who make my community in San José. I hope that people feel inspired when they look at my work and learn something new or take something away from it.?
My top music this week is Slowdive, Yung Lean, and Duster.?
