Meet Veronica & Melody, Mother & Daughter Community Advocates for Girls' Rights

In 2009,?Veronica Bush was selected to join PHI's Rise Up?as part of the inaugural leadership cohort?in Guatemala. There, she grew her advocacy skills and community connections, learning how to?mobilize for?a more just and equitable country for girls and women. In 2013, she became Rise Up’s Guatemala Country Representative.?

For years, Veronica brought?her young daughter Melody to work with her. Holding Melody on her hip, she led empowerment trainings with indigenous girls, encouraging them to finish school and fight for their dreams. With Melody in tow, Veronica met with national leaders to talk about why the education, health?and rights of girls matter—not just for girls themselves, but for the wellbeing of all Guatemalans.?"For me, girls are important: they are the present, they are the future," said Veronica. "Right now, they just need the opportunity to be able to rise up."?

As Melody grew up seeing her mother speak out for change, she too become a leader—joining her mother in the fight to advocate?for a successful national campaign to ban child marriage in Guatemala. Now Melody is blazing her own trail for girls’ rights, organizing girls to raise their voices, fight for their rights and lead change in their communities and beyond.?

Can you make a contribution today so that PHI's Rise Up?can continue to work?with leaders like Veronica and Melody around the globe—in Africa, South Asia, Latin America and the United States—to activate women and?girls to transform their lives, families and?communities?
