Valentin Nys currently holds the position of #Software Development Engineer in the Value Chain at Decathlon Digital . Alongside his professional career, he excels as a high-level athlete in the sport of #freediving, a pursuit he has been practicing for over 3 years, and he has recently reached new heights of achievement.

He has recently achieved remarkable milestones, earning the prestigious title of Vice Champion at the National Freediving Championships in France and participating in this year's World Championship in Jeju, South Korea.

Can you introduce yourself?

I’m Valentin, 33 years old, I come from Lille, France. I've been a part of the Decathlon family for 4 years, working in the Digital department as a Software Development Engineer specializing in SAP. Sports have always been a passion of mine.

After an initial experience in the medical field, I felt a natural pull to join Decathlon and contribute to its inspiring projects.

One distinctive feature about me is my height of 2.05 meters, making it impossible for people to miss me.

What is your job at Decathlon Digital?

As a Software Development Engineer specialized in SAP systems and the Value Chain, I'm focusing on developing and stabilizing applications to optimize the user experience, essentially of Retail Suppliers in the country selection and user experience.?

What are you passionate about?

I've been practicing freediving for over 3 years now, and more recently, I've taken it to a high level.

Freediving grants me the sensation of flying underwater, serving as a means to enhance my focus on sensations and strengthen my mental faculties.

My introduction to this sport came while watching the remarkable performances of Guillaume Nery and Alice Modolo, both esteemed French athletes

What do you like the most about your job today?

I like contributing to Decathlon by enhancing applications aligned with business rules. I explore technologies and processes, in order to gain a deep understanding of how things work. I'm very detail-oriented and don’t hesitate to give my opinion if I find a good idea.

What are the values you share as a decathlonian and as a freediver??

All four values (Responsibility, Vitality, Generosity, Authenticity) hold significant importance in freediving. Despite being an individual sport, you are inherently part of a #team. The first rule to abide by is 'Never dive alone!'?

• Consistency and responsibility are paramount, as each member is accountable for one another's safety.?
• Reliability and effective communication with teammates are crucial for security; sharing your plans and adhering to them is imperative.?
• Embracing feedback openly is equally vital, as it facilitates improvement and prepares for next dives

Where do you find your motivation?

The motto of Decathlon, 'To move people through the wonders of sports,' provides me with the feeling of contributing to a global challenge.?

So I would say, I find my motivation in embracing new challenges and pushing my limits, all while having others by my side.

What are the challenges you face in your career? How your sports practice can help you manage these challenges??

Work can become overwhelming, and freediving is a great way to maintain good mental health and manage stress, thereby helping me navigate the challenges of daily life.

What role do you think technology plays in freediving, and how do you incorporate it into your training?

In freediving, I analyze my training data to get feedback and improve my performances. Via a connected watch and dedicated app (Stamina - Specialized in freediving).?

Can you share a particularly memorable moment or accomplishment from your sport practice??

There were two memorable moments this year: my title of Vice-Champion of France and my participation at the World Championship in South Korea.

I wasn't expecting half of what happened to me this year!

How Decathlon encourages you to balance your competitive drive with your other priorities?

Decathlon encourages teammates to practice their sport, and they provide equipment for it. Also sharing a sport with teammates gives the motivation to continue, and it makes you feel as you're part of a whole team. In this kind of sport, sacrifices (personal and financial) are important and I am thankful for my family and friends support.?

What’s your motto?

Always believe in yourself and if you feel that you can do something, do it!

Finally, what advice would you give to someone who is interested in pursuing a passion outside their professional life??

Keep focusing on pleasure! Hard training is one thing, but never forget to enjoy your practice.?
