What responsibilities does your job entail and what does an average day look like?
In the role of a junior ship broker, there is a spectrum of responsibilities to manage, which encompass market research, client communication, documentation, operations support, and client relationship management. On a typical day, the tasks entail delving into market trends, engaging in negotiations for contracts, overseeing the coordination of vessel movements, and ensuring the maintenance of strong client relationships. This dynamic blend of duties requires adept multitasking and a keen eye for detail to effectively navigate the complexities of the maritime industry and deliver optimal service to clients.
What was your path to your current position?
My journey to my current position began with the completion of my Bachelor of Science degree in Nautical Science. Following graduation, I gained practical experience as a deck cadet, where I honed my skills in maritime operations. Drawing upon this experience, I transitioned to a shore-based role as a junior ship broker at a leading ship chartering and broking firm. Here, I utilize my combined knowledge of vessel operations and industry insights to facilitate chartering agreements for clients worldwide.
Transitioning from the stability of the Merchant Navy to the dynamic realm of commercial shipping presented its challenges, yet it was a leap essential for personal and professional growth. Despite relinquishing the security of a steadfast job, both myself and the company stand on the brink of success, propelled by clear objectives and a steadfast commitment to excellence in the ever-evolving shipping landscape.

What are the main changes you’ve seen in your field since you began and how do you see it evolving? What changes would you like to see?
Throughout my tenure in the industry, I've observed a steadfast landscape characterized by strategic manoeuvres undertaken by vessel owners in pursuit of enhanced earnings, notwithstanding occasional setbacks. Recent Houthi attacks targeting Red Sea shipping lanes have amplified safety concerns, escalated insurance costs, and necessitated vessel rerouting, thereby impacting supply chain planning and underscoring the sector's susceptibility to geopolitical tensions.
Looking ahead, I anticipate a growing emphasis on autonomous shipping technologies, encompassing remotely operated and unmanned vessels, in tandem with an unwavering dedication to curbing carbon emissions. The industry's progressive shift towards carbon neutrality, facilitated by the integration of zero-emission vessels and renewable energy sources, not only heralds’ innovation but also ensures sustainability in the times to come.
