?This week, we asked Maggie to talk about what her role entails at Newton. We know you’re curious!

What is your role at Newton?

I’m Newton’s Director of Product, although I didn’t start here. I began my journey with Newton as a Senior Product Manager, then Group Product Owner before accepting my new role as Director of Product. It has been a wild ride that I wouldn’t have any other way.

What is the best part of your role?

Getting to be at the heart of the decisions around what products we build here. Our platform is complex and there is always an intricate dance between designing features that are technically performant, aesthetically appealing, and valuable to our customers which I love. And the memes, lots of memes.

If you could describe Newton’s culture in 3 words - how would you describe it?

Fast, funny, and fanatical. The industry moves fast, Newton moves faster. We’re constantly adapting our roadmap based on what’s happening in the industry around us and what our customers are asking for. The team at Newton is really funny too, so even on the busiest days, I find myself having a laugh over Slack or on a call. Finally, fanatical. There’s nobody at Newton who isn’t passionate about their work.?

?What would you say to someone looking to apply to Newton?

Bring an aptitude for learning, a passion for creating great products, and a weirdo sense of humour and you’ll fit in just fine. One of the best things about our space is that there aren’t textbooks written about it. We’re at the forefront of a growing industry so that means that if you have the willingness to DYOR and find answers to the questions you have, you’re probably well suited to a role here.?

How do you find working remotely?

At first, I wasn’t so sure about remote work, but Newton is really good at it. I find that there’s no lack of human interaction despite being remote. I know my coworkers really well even though I haven’t met many of them IRL. I also love the freedom to work where I choose, it makes weekends feel a lot longer than they used to. I also recently adopted a puppy so being at home to take care of him (let’s be real, we take care of each other) is also a huge bonus.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I love racing sailboats and playing beach volleyball in my free time. I’ll be sailing from Victoria BC to Hawaii this summer!

What is a key feature of the best home office?

Slippers - my feet are never not cold.
