1 - Tell us about yourself, your education and background?

Well my name is Travis, and I grew up in the country town of Colac, about 40 minutes away to the southwest of Geelong in Victoria. My hobbies are tinkering with anything mechanical, messing around with computers, getting out to the bush when I can for four-wheeling or camping, gaming and watching movies.

I went to Colac Technical College for my secondary education. I finished my VCE and was looking to go to uni and studying IT, which never happened. I got a fulltime job as a baker at Irrawarra Sourdough and planned to work for a year to take time off from studying. I ended up staying at Irrawarra Sourdough for 7 years and becoming a qualified baker before starting at Cabinets by Computer in 2015.

2 - Tell us a bit about your role at CBC?

I generally work with our WoodCAM and CADCode programs, mainly setting up and maintaining them. I help the developers to test new releases and am involved with scoping out new features.

I also help out on incoming support when tickets are logged through our support portal.

3 - Which tech developments do you think will feature most prominently in the foreseeable future and what effect do you think they will have?

I think we will see more and more automation in our factories, more intuitive software ecosystems (everything communicating to one and other) and better robots. I think the more we can reduce human involvement in the factory process, the less points of fail we will have and doing so will reduce turnaround times and waste.

4 - If you had an unlimited budget, what would you buy for the office and why?

I would set up a working factory so we could real-time test software updates and new features on actual working machines.

5 - What is the craziest thing you've ever done at work?

Before COVID we were still traveling for installs. I went on an overseas holiday and it was winter there. I think it was around 1° Celsius when we left. On touching down back in Australia, I received a message on my phone saying I was needed to fly out to Sydney the next morning, and I was booked on the 6am flight. Australia at this time, and especially Sydney, was experiencing a heat wave. There were 4 or 5 days of mid 40°!

So not even 24 hours after landing, I was back on a plane flying off to do an install (I think it may of been my first solo install as well). Going from one extreme temp to the other made it an interesting 3 days.
