CH: Thanks for joining us today, Mr. Qiu. Could you please start by telling us a little bit of general information about yourself??
JQ: My name is Jason Qiu, and I'm an attorney at Colombo & Hurd. I grew up mostly in St. Louis, Missouri, but I'm currently based in Chicago. My family immigrated to the United States when I was three years old, and I decided to study law after completing my bachelor's degree in biochemistry for many reasons. For one, I thought that developing training in multiple disciplines would better prepare me to solve problems in a future world where very complex problems may require a depth of knowledge across different fields and disciplines. I also knew that being a successful lawyer involves a lot of qualities that I enjoy, such as being analytical, creative and empathetic.?
CH: And why did you decide to practice law in the field of immigration???
JQ: I decided to practice immigration law because it allows me to make a direct and positive impact on people's lives. As the child of immigrants, the process is very personal to me, and it's rewarding to have the opportunity and the ability to help families and individuals navigate this process, which can be very complicated and intimidating.??
CH: I’d love to speak with you about one of your favorite approvals – I know you have so many but could you tell us about one of your favorites???
JQ: Sure - one memorable case was a Brazilian Project Manager. He had a strong case, but USCIS nonetheless issued a request for evidence asking for additional supporting evidence. He had also previously received a denial with a different law firm. So, he was feeling pretty disheartened and worried about his case. We developed a strategy focused on presenting the significance of his accomplishments to show how he stood out in his field, and we crafted a response that really highlighted how his proposed endeavor was important to the nation. Within a month, we received the approval.??
CH: What elements were key to achieve the approval???
JQ: I think being very detail oriented, meticulous and creative with his case. Also, we made sure to communicate with the client throughout the entire process, since, as I mentioned, he was understandably very worried about whether he would be able to come to the United States, and he was almost ready to give up on the process. But ultimately, we were able to reassure him that we had confidence in his case, that he had enough to get an approval, and we really focused on finding things we knew would set him apart.?
CH: How was the interaction with the client during the process???
JQ: Well, he was feeling very dejected about his own profile and the strength of his case, so I knew that it was important to communicate to him that we believed in him and to guide him through the process every step of the way. And ultimately, it paid off because we got a great result! When he received the approval, he was so grateful. He kept saying: “I can’t believe it”, so it felt great to be a part of helping him achieve that after such a long road.?
CH: And how did you and your team feel when the case was approved???
JQ: We were thrilled for him, of course! This was a meaningful one because of the case's long history and this client’s difficult path to get to the finish line. It was so rewarding to hear his reaction when he received the approval.??
CH: What is your favorite part of being an immigration attorney at Colombo & Hurd??
JQ: My favorite part of being part of Colombo & Hurd is the supportive and professional environment here. We have a very smart and talented team of people who truly want to help immigrants to achieve their goals. So, I think it makes all the difference for our clients to know that they have a team behind them who's looking out for them.??
CH: What do you like to do in your free time, when you're not helping your clients obtain green cards???
JQ: Chicago is a big foodie city, so I love to eat. There's always something new to try and an incredible range of cuisines that really reflects the diversity of this city. I also enjoy rock climbing and working out.?
CH: Your story and insights are incredibly valuable, thank you so much for sharing.?
