Meet the Team: How Young Talents Contribute to Sustainability in Our Operations

7 Questions with Nargiz Alekperzade, our Supply Chain Sustainability Communications and Knowledge Management Intern.

Nargiz joined our team in September 2023 in the final year of her MA degree in Marketing and Communications at Sapienza University of Rome. She undertook an exciting eight-month internship with the sustainability team in the Supply Chain & Delivery Division at our Rome headquarters. Nargiz is a Russian national and is fluent in Russian, English, Italian and French.

This internship was a learning experience, but Nargiz's persistence and enthusiasm enabled her to contribute fresh ideas and knowledge to the team, which led to the creation of a series of communications products that focused on greening our supply chain and addressing environmental sustainability issues in our operations.

Meet Nargiz through this quick recap of her experience with us.

I am a graduate student in Communications, and I was looking for an opportunity to enhance my competencies in a meaningful way within the international development and humanitarian context. The internship in the Sustainable Supply Chain unit at WFP felt like a perfect match. Sustainability is a highly relevant area of focus in social impact, and from a communications perspective, conveying this message is both challenging and exciting.

Witnessing the impact of our sustainability awareness efforts within the organization and beyond. Such changes are not immediate, but seeing our team’s work translate into action was very rewarding.

?

Probably a campaign we did around COP28 – it highlighted WFP Supply Chain’s sustainability efforts on a significant global platform and brought about opportunities to collaborate with the wider humanitarian community.

?

Aside from gaining practical experience in communications and knowledge management, I learned to adapt! WFP Supply Chain is an incredibly dynamic environment, and oftentimes you need to make use of available resources and navigate change. This is a transferrable skill that will shape my approach in future roles.

I would encourage them to embrace every opportunity to grow.? Take advantage of the knowledge and experience within the organization; there is a strong culture of knowledge sharing, and curiosity is always appreciated and encouraged. An internship with WFP will also help you learn more about yourself and recognize your own abilities and develop new skills and fresh ideas.

The dedication and commitment of people – my team, colleagues in the field, and the resilient communities served by the organization. Their stories show the importance of WFP’s mission and the impact it has on millions of lives around the world.?

Purposeful, collaborative, fulfilling
