Meet Sr. Brig?o and his most significant project: Magic Storm | Mundo Indie
Involved with programming for years, he has done live broadcasts and keeps creating content for his channel while developing his next game, Magic Storm. This is Eduardo Soares, also known as Sr. Brig?o on the internet.
Eduardo Soares comes from Iturama (MG) but currently lives in Uberlandia (MG). He has been working in programming for six years as a web front-end developer, creating interfaces for websites and applications. However, it was during the COVID-19 pandemic that he started his path into game development. He has developed some games, both to enhance his knowledge in certain areas and to participate in game jams, where the participants have a limited amount of time to create a game, usually with a specific theme or characteristic.
His history with video games began in his childhood. He started on the computer with games such as Duke Nukem 3D and Dangerous Dave, also spending time in LAN houses where he had access to a CD with several games, which was part of his life for a long time. He also mentions FIFA 98 and CS 1.6. Soares did not own a console, but he owned a DVD player with several games.
At the beginning of his path in this field, Soares saw community building as an important point so that his game would have more reach and, consequently, get more feedback on it, helping in developing and promoting his projects. Initially, he did some streams on Twitch, but he decided to focus on studying game development and, sometime later, on creating video content. He produces videos about various games and occasionally talks about his projects on his YouTube channel.
Soares says that the idea to enter the gaming development field came in 2020; "it arose in the pandemic; it was that kind of dream that I had never really picked up to pursue," he says. He reports that since he already had a fair amount of programming knowledge, he decided to jump in headfirst, even though game creation still involves graphics, scripting, etc. He started his studies with GameMaker and then started studying Unity. After the most challenging period of the pandemic, Soares continued studying game development and applying his knowledge to some projects that he makes available for anyone to download and test.
With about three years into game development, Soares says the most challenging part for him is building a community—a group of people who will play his games, help with feedback, and spread his project to more people, getting him and his games noticed.
The developer from Minas Gerais states that he has played several indie games, such as Hollow Knight, Stardew Valley, Super Meat Boy, and other successful titles, as well as following companies that are a little more mature but with teams that are small and have managed to do well with their creations.
In his journey, Soares also participated in a game jam with a colleague, which resulted in a game that is also available for download, entitled "Em Busca de Aventura" (In Search of Adventure). The game followed the theme proposed by the competition, which was to create a game to play together with someone. The game was developed in two days, and, according to Soares, he still intends to return to the project someday.
Eduardo Soares' current project is Magic Storm, a rogue-like shoot-'em-up like the recent success Vampire Survivors, but with its own features. Magic Storm is being developed in Unity and puts the player on a map where he must survive for as long as possible while improving his powers, killing enemies, and building his arsenal of skills.
When choosing their abilities, players can opt for more offensive, defensive, or other approaches that suit them best in that match; after all, if you die, it's not the end of the world; just press play again and try to survive longer.
The game's story is still in the works, but everything indicates that the protagonist will be someone summoned from another world, receiving powers from a god of that place, thus starting his journey.
One of the key features of Magic Storm is that you choose which ability you want to use rather than having it be completely automatic like in Vampire Survivors, giving you a little more control over your actions. Some skills will only require that you activate them, such as the ring of fire around your character, for instance, but there will also be skills that require you to aim to cast them, such as a skill where you launch a meteor at a certain area of the map.
The idea for Magic Storm arose alongside inspirations like Vampire Survivors, intending to release a game on Steam that is not simply a prototype for study.

Eduardo Soares says that he has a "dream game". He would like to develop a game in the hero shooter style with a MOBA aesthetic, like Paladins and Smite, which inspired this project. He says he still doesn't know if the project will turn out as he envisions, so after developing a few games, he plans to conduct tests to see if his idea will work out well.
