Meet SCiFi Foods
Just over two years ago, in the midst of a pandemic, we set out with an admittedly lofty vision: to redefine the way meat is made. Now, as we emerge from stealth with a new name, key technical milestones under our belts, and a top-tier team, we realize what once seemed like a far-off goal is now much closer to reality than we ever imagined it would be. So as co-founder and CEO, I'm proud to formally introduce SCiFi Foods, its work, and its mission to the world.
This is not my first foray into the land of startups. I'm fortunate to have started and led companies my entire professional life. However, this is my debut when it comes to delving into the food space. And yes, though we are a science and tech company at our core (hence our name), our purpose is to make a (massive) impact on the very broken food system. Part of what gets me so excited about what we are doing, and why I look forward to going to work every single day, is that food is something we can all relate to. It's personal. It's what fuels our bodies and is at the center of some of our fondest memories. You can talk about food to anyone, anywhere. And if we do not find better ways to produce the food we're making today, we will all be in very big trouble, very soon.
Additionally, I love meat. For me, there is nothing better than a freshly grilled burger on a summer night, topped with fresh, crisp lettuce, and all the other fixings (caramelized onions and gruyere cheese are my favorite!). However, I do NOT love the way that burger makes its way onto my plate. From the environmental havoc that the beef industry causes, to the cruelty factory farming entails, frankly, it's become hard to enjoy a burger anymore. And while I give credit to the plant based space and all the progress it has made over the last decade, for me, the taste simply has not reached the level to compete with real meat—and I know it never will for many others, too.
This is why SCiFi Foods exists. We believe that there is and always will be a huge market for meat. In fact, it has almost reached 1T dollars, one of the largest financial opportunities in the world today. We also believe that science and technology, which have solved so many pressing needs for mankind in the last century, can and will also solve the way we produce meat—to make this process cleaner, kinder, and drastically more efficient, as the planet pushes past 8B people and the threat of global warming increases year after year. We want to make meat that we can all depend on.
Making cultivated meat—real meat, grown from cells instead of in an animal—is no longer just a pipedream. It's here and it's happening now. We plan to be the first to bring the world cultivated beef, starting with a burger that blends cultured beef with the best of plant-based meat. Our burgers are vastly more delicious and closer in taste to a full-on beef burger, and because of our unique strategy of using cell line engineering to solve the biggest cost and scale challenges, we have a clear route to get our products to price parity with conventional meat soon. And while we know there is still much to be done and many challenges to face, we also realize it's now time to begin sharing our mission, work, and progress with you. And one day soon, our burgers.

2 年Josh, it is a difficult challenge to deliver the taste and texture of meat. It requires a multidisciplinary approach to combine existing ingredients with new technologies/ new ingredients. Looking forward to seeing ingredients that SCiFi Foods will add to hep build a better toolbox.
