Meet with the School to Get Needed Accommodations

Meet with the School to Get Needed Accommodations

Securing the right support can transform your child's educational experience. While we previously explored ADHD medications, today we're focusing on a crucial aspect of supporting children with ADHD: working with schools to secure necessary accommodations.

The terminology used here is UK specific but I hope it's familiar enough to help people reading in other countries.

Know Your Rights

In many countries, children with ADHD have legal protections for educational support. While specific systems may vary, let's explore the UK approach as an example:

  • In the UK, support for children with ADHD falls under the Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) system.
  • The SEND Code of Practice, introduced in 2014, provides statutory guidance for organisations working with children who have special educational needs and disabilities.
  • This code covers children from birth to 25 years old in England, a wider age range than previous systems.

It's important to research your country's specific laws to advocate effectively for your child. For instance, the US has the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504.

The SEN Support Process

Most children with ADHD will receive support through SEN Support, a four-part cycle known as "Assess, Plan, Do, Review":

  1. Assess: The school identifies the child's needs
  2. Plan: The school and parents agree on adjustments and interventions
  3. Do: The teacher and support staff deliver the planned support
  4. Review: The effectiveness of the support is reviewed at least three times per year

Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plans

For children with more complex needs, an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan might be necessary:

  • EHC plans replaced the old "Statements of SEN" in 2014.
  • These are legal documents outlining a child's educational, health and social care needs.
  • They're reserved for children who need more support than the school can typically provide through SEN Support.

Common Accommodations in Schools

Schools can offer various supports to help ADHD students thrive:

  • Extra time in exams (typically 25% additional time, but can vary based on individual needs)
  • A quiet place to work, sometimes called a 'nurture room'
  • Breaking tasks into smaller chunks, often using a visual 'task board'
  • Use of assistive technology, like laptops for writing
  • Visual timetables, common in primary schools
  • Fidget tools or movement breaks (policies can vary between schools)

Navigate the Process Like a Pro

  1. Request an evaluation in writing
  2. Attend the evaluation meeting with prepared documentation
  3. Develop a comprehensive accommodation plan
  4. Schedule regular reviews to assess effectiveness

Master the Art of the School Meeting

Preparation is key to successful collaboration with your child's school:

  • Create a list of your child's specific challenges and needs
  • Approach the meeting with a collaborative, not confrontational, mindset
  • Highlight your child's strengths alongside their challenges
  • Don't hesitate to ask questions if anything is unclear

Empower Your Child

  • Involve your child in the process when age-appropriate
  • Teach self-advocacy skills that can benefit them for life
  • Encourage open communication about what works and what doesn't

Additional UK-Specific Information

  • Familiarize yourself with the SEND Code of Practice, available on the gov.uk website
  • You have the right to request an EHC needs assessment if you believe your child needs one
  • If you disagree with decisions about your child's support, you can appeal to the SEND Tribunal

Remember, the goal is to create an environment where your child can thrive both academically and socially.

Tomorrow, we'll discuss the hereditary nature of ADHD and its implications for families. Understanding this genetic link can provide valuable insights for managing ADHD within a family context.
