Meet our suppliers - Seacourt Printing
Timo Boldt
Every time you eat Gousto, you cut 7 kilos of CO2 emissions, which is 23% less than a supermarket shop! With 60% of UK food being ultra-processed (yikes), choosing Gousto is not just delicious - it's much healthier!
We’re committed to championing UK businesses who share our values. Our suppliers are one of the key building blocks of our business - we want to grow and share success with them. At least a dozen different suppliers contribute to each Gousto box: Veggies, proteins, carbs, condiments...RECIPE CARDS.
Two weeks ago you met Henderson’s Relish (read article here). This week I want to introduce our recipe card supplier, Seacourt.
Let’s start with a quick company introduction…
Established in 1946, Seacourt is a market leading environmental print and communications company with an official zero-waste to landfill status since October 2009.
At the heart of Seacourt is a simple idea - to produce beautiful work which works for clients and which does not damage the environment. This is what they call Planet Positive Printing?.
What is Planet Positive Printing??
It’s about having a Net Positive impact, from forest to delivery, on the environment, society and economy. It’s being in a position to support key principles including the circular economy and clean energy. It’s creating a sustainable business that gives back more than it consumes.
How does that translate into action?
Seacourt has taken complete ownership of the environmental impact of their entire supply chain.
A milestone highlight reel
In 1997 they went waterless, the ultimate environmental print process. In 2001, they became carbon neutral. In 2003, they switched to 100% renewable energy. In 2009, they achieved zero waste to landfill. In 2015, they developed LightTouch?, a waterless LED-UV printing technology. This means unlike conventional printing processes, Seacourt doesn’t use valuable freshwater or harmful Volatile Organic Compounds in their printing at all!
Beyond printing process & operations
Fun fact #1: Seacourt has free charging stations on site that use 100% renewable energy - for their sales teams and directors, who ALL drive hybrid or full electric vehicles! Fun fact #2: They keep worms to recycle food waste.
Offsetting entire carbon footprint PLUS 10%
By investing in the widely recognised, UN-backed ClimateCare programme. Seacourt is supporting The Ecomapua Project at the mouth of the Amazon, which is helping conserve 86,000 hectares of forest and regenerate a further 1,200 hectares of deforested land.
What’s next BEYOND carbon neutral?!
Pursuing sustainability is a continuous journey. Seacourt is exploring what it means to be net positive - to be actively doing good - for the environment and society. A standard process does not even exist yet for this. I’d definitely be watching this space!
Why it’s been amazing working with Seacourt
In the words of Derek McRae, Director at Seacourt:
The best partnerships are those based on shared values and vision, a common view, and we certainly have this with Gousto. We both share the view that business can and should be a force for good.
Growing together, purpose-driven
I firmly believe that every business can and should be playing a part in protecting our planet. Seacourt shares our view at Gousto in envisioning a global economy that uses business as a force for good.
Thanks to Seacourt we produce all our recipe cards (and other printed materials) in a way that is net carbon positive. On the other hand, “Gousto’s growth has had a very positive impact on our business. We have been able to invest in new machinery, an opportunity to produce more Planet Positive Printing, resulting in more carbon being taken out of the atmosphere,” said Derek.
Why do less bad… when you can do more good?
I’ve recently written a series of three articles on how we think about sustainability at Gousto, how we’ve been using technology to minimise food waste and how we’ve been tackling plastic waste. Click on to read more if you’re interested!
