Meet our French A Level scholars

The Trustees of the Alliance fran?aise d’Oxford have awarded their annual French A Level Scholarship to Monty, from The Cherwell School , and Gavin from Matthew Arnold School .

Gavin already speaks Danish and English, and enjoys reading French literature including poetry by Verlaine. He studies sociology and geography and finds time to play the violin and play tennis.

Monty has ambitions to be a journalist, perhaps work in France, and happens to love a challenge in grammar, for which we congratulate him!

We were delighted to welcome them in their first class today and we hope that the scholarship will make a difference to their lives. ?

About the scholarship

The Trustees’ A-Level Scholarship Award is a prestigious award for sixth form students of French and is intended to recognise a potential for excellence. It is open to students at school or sixth form college in Oxford or the surrounding area. The Scholarship provides up to five terms of free group tuition to support a candidate’s current French A-Level studies. The tuition is designed to supplement the A-Level French teaching in a candidate’s current school.

The Alliance received 13 applications this year. The trustees were impressed by the standard of the submissions, with pupils sharing a wide and unexpected range of interest in the subject, including love of French Rap, Edith Piaf and Simone de Beauvoir!

Funding the scholarship

For the second year running, a second scholarship was made possible by an anonymous donor. ?The trustees are grateful for this generous support and have also decided to expand the Alliance's fundraising efforts so that more students can benefit from this initiative.

We hope to be able to support the work MFL teachers accomplish in schools for years to come, in line with our mission of promotion of French language and its cultures in Oxford and the surrounding area.
