Meet Olga Korol: Program Manager for External Relations at Empatia, OPORA Foundation

Today, we are excited to introduce you to Olga Korol , a vital member of OPORA and the Program Manager for External Relations at Empatia Program , our mental health program. Olga has been with OPORA since its inception and has played a pivotal role in its growth and success.

Olga, you've been with OPORA since the beginning. What was your work like in the early days, and how has it evolved?

Olga Korol: When we first launched Empatia, there were only three of us, yet the workload felt like it was meant for a team of at least twelve. We were responsible for everything—building the program while simultaneously recruiting staff. It was an inspiring time, as we were driven by the opportunity to address one of the most pressing needs for displaced Ukrainians in the Netherlands: mental health support.

Despite your current role at OPORA, you have a professional background in finance and law. Can you tell us how this background influences your work now?

Olga Korol: Many people assume I’m a psychologist, but I’m actually a financier by training. Before the war, I worked as a financial and operational director for a major holding company in Kyiv, specializing in construction and high-end real estate. I also hold a master's degree in law, which has been invaluable in negotiations with clients and partners.

This experience in finance and law provided a strong foundation for managing processes, building teams, overseeing projects, and fostering partnerships. Most importantly, it taught me to prioritize people. Even in my previous role, I always focused on creating a supportive and growth-oriented environment for the team. This philosophy—empathy, humanity, and support—carries over into my work at OPORA today.

What makes the role of Program Manager for External Relations unique?

Olga Korol: My role involves seeing opportunities where others might not. It's about empowering others through collaboration and partnerships to achieve something greater. I’m passionate about sharing our mission and making people fall in love with our program. Hearing how much our work means to the Ukrainian community, Dutch partners, and European society motivates me to continue expanding our reach.

What inspires you most in your work with OPORA, particularly in the challenging field of mental health support for displaced people?

Olga Korol: People are my biggest inspiration. Both the people we help and the incredible colleagues I work with. There’s nothing more fulfilling than knowing that our work is improving lives and making a meaningful difference.
