The?#MSAEInterviewSeries?continues with one of our Economics alumni, Gabriel Usan who graduated from the MS in Applied Economics in 2020. After winning the Open Data Science conference, he joined Milliman as an intern. We caught up with him and he has this to say.
Where do you call home? And where are you located now??Home is Milan, Italy. Currently, I live in San Francisco.
What is your current position / main responsibilities???Data Scientist at Milliman. We create solutions for insurance companies in climate change, catastrophic events and telematics.
How has the IDEC/MSAE program prepared you for your current role??The MSAE prepared me very well for inference problems and gave me a good foundation in machine learning and data science.?
What did you do for your summer fieldwork/thesis research? Any interesting stories?? As a MSAE I didn’t do a summer fieldwork. During summer 2019 I interned at Silicon Valley Bank.
What was your biggest highlight from the program? Winning a scholarship to go to the Open Data Science conference, there I met Larry who offered me an internship, and is my current supervisor at Milliman.
What advice do you have for both the current students and prospective students? Work hard and go out to meetups/events/conferences and talk to people in the business. Communicate your passions to them and opportunities will knock on your door.
Last but not the least, what do you like to do in your free time? Any fun facts about yourself? I started taking acting classes in the summer 2021 and I’m loving it! I was cast in an independent short film and we were semifinalists at the SF Indie Short Film Festival in October 2021.
