Meet Me at Stormy’s
Pop quiz—what’s the oldest business in Urbandale? It’s likely Stormy’s Dixieland Tavern, which serves up a rich history with a focus on the future of downtown Urbandale.
“We have customers whose grandparents also liked coming to Stormy’s, which people describe as a mix of ‘Cheers’ and ‘Happy Days,’” said owner Randy Stevens, 53, referring to the classic TV sitcoms.
Located near 70th Street and Douglas Avenue, Stormy’s has been a staple of the community for 86 years. This beloved, neighborhood tavern takes its name from the Dixieland Restaurant, where the Dixon family served home-cooked meals in the early 1930s.
“The Dixons were Stormy Robinson’s aunt and uncle,” said Stevens, referring to the business owner who opened Stormy’s Dixieland Tavern in 1938 and ran it for decades.
Incredibly, Stormy’s has only had four owners (including Stevens since 2012) during its long history. For generations, customers have appreciated this low-key, friendly bar’s affordable food and drinks in a fun atmosphere for socializing and entertainment.
"We’re a welcoming spot for socializing and relaxing, open from 7 a.m. every day," Stevens said.
The first customers of the day drop by to drink coffee and read the newspaper. By 10 a.m. each weekday, people drop by to play along with “The Price is Right” game show on TV. Throughout the day, other customers stop by to play cards, join informal pool tournaments, participate in bingo night or trivia night, order a pizza or sing karaoke on Friday.
“We’re a multi-generational bar,” said Stevens, noting that Stormy’s customers come from a variety of backgrounds. “A lot of our regulars have been coming here for years.”

Customers can enjoy a variety of drinks, from a house-made Bloody Mary to a cocktail made with fresh-squeezed orange juice. Others stop by for supper on Thursdays, where steak dinners are still $10. “Old-fashioned prices are part of this well-loved tradition,” Stevens said.
Bringing new energy to downtown Urbandale
Stormy’s also offers modern amenities, including pet-friendly outdoor seating. With its central location, the bar offers easy access to customers across the Des Moines metro.
“Everyone knows where Stormy’s is,” said Stevens, whose team includes about 10 part-time employees. “It hasn’t lost its luster after all these years.”
He’s excited about the city’s plans to revitalize downtown Urbandale. “I think it’s a great idea that will bring a lot of new energy to this corridor. We look forward to being part of this revitalization.”
