At Country Culture, we're thrilled to feature the remarkable Katherine Mahoney in our "Meet the Maker" series this week. Katherine is the creative mind behind Katherine Mahoney Ceramics, an online ceramics business dedicated to creating traditional and timeless pieces that tell a story.
Katherine's love affair with pottery began quite serendipitously. On a visit to her brother's pottery studio, she was captivated by the beautiful handcrafted pots, the mesmerizing technique of the wheel, and the magic of the firing kilns. That day, something inside her clicked. She knew she had found her calling. Determined to pursue this newfound passion, Katherine sought an apprenticeship and soon found herself working at Cranbrook Station Pottery under the guidance of Keith Harding, honing her skills as a production thrower.
It wasn’t long before Katherine and her brother Duncan decided to open their own pottery studio in Kent, England. There, they designed and produced a stunning range of pottery for the home, each piece reflecting their shared love for the craft. Katherine’s journey then took her to Hong Kong, where she fell in love with Asian ceramics. She began exhibiting unique pieces, gained international acclaim, and shared her knowledge through teaching at various institutions and museums.
In the 90s, lucky for us, Katherine made the move to Australia. Here, her focus shifted to tableware, all while continuing to create one-off, wheel-thrown pieces. Her talents quickly caught the attention of restaurants, designers, galleries, and individuals who sought her exquisite creations.
Today, you can find Katherine tucked away in a charming wooden cabin at the bottom of a suburban Sydney garden. It’s here that she continues to craft her beautiful ceramics, each piece a testament to her dedication and artistry. Katherine's work is not only visually stunning but also highly functional. Her elegant bowls or bottle vases can grace a mantelpiece, serve as a centerpiece on a kitchen table, or hold a fresh salad. Each piece allows its owner to become part of the creative process, making it unique in its use and display.
